It’s a bar and grill slash art gallery and jazz club. Hal’s, located in the trendy 1300-block of Abbot Kinney, brings together the best of Venice’s funk and L.A.’s chic. Outside, it’s simple: wood-framing, lots of windows. Inside, it’s dim and sleek: bar on the right, dining on the left, original artwork on all walls.
The pieces are interesting nothing quite the same, no established theme or artist, all just effortlessly cool. Hal’s trademark? A multi-dimensional portrait of a man leaning on a bar (or table?), hand posed around a wine (or water?) glass. Take a look and decide for yourself.
At Hal’s the lighting is perfect a dining ambiance without being overtly romantic, a playful setting for paintings beside plates plus the food is even better.
Known for its dynamic seasonal specialties, the summer menu currently includes such delicacies as a satiating heirloom tomato risotto (only $5!); baby arugula, sliced artichoke, and pecorino salad ($12); and red wine-sauteed Alaskan King Wild Salmon ($30) and that’s barely a start.
Though the menu at Hal’s could border on pricey, selective ordering can easily make these delicious meals amazingly affordable. Flexible options, such as Hal’s Vegetarian Plate a choice of any four side orders (plenty of food! for just $15) , and inventive favorites, like the duck ragu Garganelli pasta ($19), allow food courtesans to make Hal’s what they want: a formal evening out (it’s a great locale for celebrations) or a delicious, low-key, everyday meal.
On Sundays and Mondays, Hal’s is especially popular, crowded with out-for-a-good-time young professionals, stocking the house to hear some of L.A.’s finest jazz musicians live. Regular performers include the likes of Phillip Upchurch, Cal Bennet, Jon Bolivar, Louis Taylor, Greg Poree, and more.
Hal’s is open for brunch, lunch, dinner, and drinks seven days a week. Monday-Friday: 11:30 a.m. â 2:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 a.m. â 2:00 a.m.
