Tonight on TV: Miami Ink, Star Wars in Japan, The Truman Show

August 14th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

August is finally here which means the baseball playoff race is heating up, football is on its way back and, most importantly, the new TV season is almost here. We must soldier on for a few more work weeks until all our favorite shows come back in September to make the drudgery more bearable.

But don’t despair, below are enough good shows for tonight to get you through at least this evening.

Reality Rundown

  • “Miami Ink” is back on TLC tonight at 10:00 and celebrates its return with a trip abroad. Yoji takes Bridget and Sidney home to Japan in order to see his mother and rebuild some family ties. Back in Miami, a doctor approaches the tattooed team for help with a young patient.
  • Discovery Channel’s incredibly droll “Some Assembly Required” rolls out two new episodes at 8:00 and 8:30. This series takes viewers behind the scenes of how mundane and everyday items are made. Tonight it’s washable crayons and pipe organs followed by Ludwig Drums and Compound Bows. Expect lots of funny quips from co-host Brian Ungar formerly of the Craig Kilborn-era “Daily Show”.

Olympic Games

  • Michael Phelps has the night off from Gold, but he will hit the pool for two preliminary swims tonight on NBC at 8:00. Also on the schedule for the evening are Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball, Volleyball and Canoeing.
  • CNBC sticks with its trend of showing Softball and Boxing starting at 9:00.

News & Docs

  • G4 journeys to the Far East tonight at 8:00 with a look into the Star Wars in Japan Celebration. The 90-minute show features interviews with the stars of the films and a look at collectibles only available in Japan.
  • PBS looks into the formation of the Chinese Olympic baseball team tonight at 10:00. This hour-long special looks at how a former major league manager and Hall of Fame pitcher Bruce Hurst go China’s ragtag group of baseballers ready to compete for the 2008 Beijing games.

Scripted Bliss

  • On Showtime, Penn and Teller tackle their farthest-reaching topic yet on “Bullshit”. Tonight at 10:00 they examine how World Peace is a pipe dream and completely out of sync with human nature. Pretty heavy stuff for a half-mute duo of musicians.
  • “Burn Notice” moves into the Miami hip-hop scene tonight at 10:00 on USA. In order to catch an embezzler at a hip-hop mogul’s charity, Michael must convince the thief to steal a larger amount. Hopefully they aren’t trying to rob Suge Knight.

Free Movie of the Night

  • Remember when “The Truman Show” seemed like the most outrageous idea in the world? Ten years later in seems we’re on the precipice of its premise becoming the next hit for Mark Burnett. Because of that, the movie resonates even more deeply than it did when it first hit theaters. Don’t believe me? See for yourself tonight at 9:00 on TBS.

Remember to check back every day for your guide through the summer TV jungle.
