Food News: Compost Bins, Fruit Flys Gone, Barista Competition

August 15th, 2008 Written by: Liana Aghajanian· No Comments

In an interesting twists of sorts, we’ve got quite a few bits and pieces of news concerning food in Los Angeles.

  • It seems L.A. is getting health conscious and environmentally friendly by the day. The Los Angeles City Council approved a pilot program on Tuesday that will provide 5,000 households with a 2-gallon bin that will be used for food waste, reports the Los Angeles Times. Residents are asked to start tossing their scraps, leftovers and food-soiled packages in the bins beginning next month. What will the city do with all this food, you ask? The scraps (which will be combined with lawn clippings) will be delivered to a composting center near Bakersfield. The bins will be delivered to residents in Harbor Gateway, Lincoln Heights and South Los Angeles.
  • While we haven’t solved L.A.’s drug problem, crime problem, traffic problem , you can go to sleep tonight knowing we’ve solved something: the Mediterranean fruit fly infestation has been officially declared over. The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced Thursday that the infestation has been cleared in Los Angeles, Santa Clara and Solan counties. The Mediterranean fruit fly is a common insect that threatens agriculture in California. State officials say the Mediterranean fruit fly can infest more than 260 types of fruits and vegetables by laying eggs in the produce.

  • While you’re out party hardying the night away on weekends, I’m at home watching the cake decorating and pasty making competitions on the FOOD network. One of my favorites is the coffee competitions, where hardest working coffee connoisseurs in the business concoct the best espressos and frappes you’ve ever had. Oh, they also make beautiful designs out of latte foam, which is the best part of the entire show. Either way, I digress. The Ultimate Barista Challenge USA is coming to L.A. next weekend from August 23 to 25th at the Western Food Expo. With challenges in Latte Art, Espresso Cocktail and Best of Brew, this coffee competition is sure to stir your senses.
  • Remember that fast-food ban that was announced last month for a 32-square-mile area south of the 10 freeway? Yea, people aren’t too happy about that, reports the NY Times. Most notable is a quote from Caroline Adeuole, who thinks the ban really has no affect. “No matter where they put those restaurants, if people want that, they will drive to get it.” Let’s face it, she has a point.
