Gregg Laswell knows how to put on a concert. He has the ability to play the piano and guitar (although not simultaneously, which would be really cool) in a way that gorgeously mirrors his spectacular vocals. With three CD’s already released, Gregg Lawell is certainly becoming a veteran of the Los Angeles music scene. LA.CityZine had the opportunity to check Gregg out at The Hotel Cafe on Friday, August 15 where he performed an hour long set of songs from his ever growing catalog including those from his recently released, “Three Flights From Alto Nindo” and even an unreleased track. Like many performances at The Hotel Cafe, there was an intimacy to the concert as a whole that suited each of Greg Laswell’s songs quite well. Additionally, MySpace has selected him to be part of the “Artist Discovery Series” which is only more affirmation that this guy is worth all of the buzz he’s been getting.
There is certainly no shortage of handsome, talented male singer/songwriters on the music scene these days but Greg Laswell is far from another one of that massive heard. Handsome, absolutely and, without a doubt, he is talented, very talented. He sings with a depth of knowing that is rare in even the most mature artists and exemplifies his ability to interpret life’s difficult moments into beautiful song.

While his songs have a unique, mature tone, his live performances showcase his sarcastic and playful personality. In between sets he talked about his various songs and how many of them have a certain air of melancholy which he thankfully does not bring into his artists-audience banter. By not taking his serious songs too, well, seriously, Gregg Laswell shows that he is the genuine singer/songwriter in a legion of fame-hungry phonies.
Most importantly, Gregg Laswell entertained the audience with a well constructed hour of music and repartee. It is a rare opportunity for audiences to witness truly great talent in such a small, intimate setting and Gregg Laswell is offering Angelenos the opportunity to experience exactly that for the next three Friday nights. LA.CityZine highly suggests making the time to see an artists who is willing to bare his heart on the stage while singing and highlight his sense of humor when he’s not.
Greg Laswell will also be playing August 22, 29 at 10 PM at The Hotel Cafe. Must be 21+ and the show is $10 at door.
