Tonight on TV: Usain Bolt, The Hills, The Middleman

August 18th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

Just a few more weeks of summer which means brand new nightly TV is just around the corner. Unfortunately for readers of Cityzine, it means only a few more weeks of this column. Chin up, there’s still some great picks below.

Olympic Games

Michael Phelps may be out of the pool, but there’s still a lot of Gold to go out in Beijing. Tonight on NBC at 8:00 catch Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball, and Track & Field. In the latter you’ll get the chance to see new fastest man in the world Usain Bolt needs to run the entire 200M in order to set another world record.

  • On CNBC it’s Wrestling and Table Tennis starting at 9:00.

Reality Rundown

  • After almost an entire summer of being able to flip around the dial without seeing stupid rich people acting stupid, “The Hills” shoves it right back in our face with its season premiere tonight at 10:00. But that’s not all; MTV has found enough benevolence to bring us an entire marathon of past episodes leading up to the big moment. Why pay for a lobotomy when you can get one for free just by watching TV?

  • If you’re a parent, you know it can be a nightmare to take your kids to the beach. Well, what if you had eight little ankle biters? Jon & Kate Gosselin do, and tonight at 9:00 on TLC they hit the Jersey Shore with their gaggle of rugrats. It’s an hour-long ep of this normally half-hour series, so carnage is certain to ensue.

News & Docs

  • If it’s Monday, it must be time for our obligatory HBO Documentary slot. Tonight the premium channel shortens its doc to 45 minutes for a look at Helen Thomas, a woman who’s covered White House press conferences for 57 years for Hearst Newspapers. Best of all, it’s certain to show President Bush’s stirring rendition of “Happy Birthday” to Ms. Thomas that broke up the entire room.
  • Wouldn’t it have been cool to learn how to play golf directly from Tiger Woods before he became the best player of all time? Well tonight it’s your chance to do just that, kind of. The next big player in golf is 22-year-old American Anthony Kim and he hits the Golf Channel at 8:00 for “Playing Lessons From the Pros”. In this series, you’ll see Kim play a practice round and get a peek into the way he plays the game. You probably won’t be able to play like afterwards though.

Scripted Bliss

  • Natalie Morales, the best-looking lady on television, brilliant spitfire comedienne, and now TV Column commenter. So I have to recommend “The Middleman” again, right? Well, it’s not just because of that; it’s also because it’s the funniest show of the summer (with the possible exception of listening to Josh Elliot stumble over the TelePrompTer each morning on the new Live AM Sportscenter) and recommending it gives me the excuse to write tonight’s episode title, “The Vampiric Puppet Lamentation”. Catch it tonight on 10:00 on ABC Family.
  • If you haven’t watched “Generation Kill” yet, then you’re missing one of the best miniseries in the history of television. If you just missed on Sunday, then you’re in luck. HBO2 is re-airing the sixth installment of the series, “Stay Frosty”, tonight at 8:00. Also, if you need to catch up and have OnDemand, there’s not better way to spend your TV week with a new installment of the Iraq War miniseries each night this week in anticipation of Sunday’s finale.

Free Movie of the Night

  • Remember when they used to show movies on network TV? Take a step back to those ages with “Bewitched” on ABC tonight at 9:00. It’s the Nicole Kidman/Will Ferrell version from 2005 so I assume it will be brand new for every reader of this column.

Remember to check back every day for your guide through the summer TV jungle.
