August 19th - Lee Ann Womak is best recognized by her country-but-really-more-pop-esque song, “I Hope You Dance.” The country singer has won two Grammys and several Country Music Awards. She’s spent quite a bit of time on the charts as well. For her August 19th birthday today, we hope she dances too.
August 20th - Robert Plant is awesome. Okay, maybe he needs more of an introduction. Robert Plant is the lead singer for Led Zeppelin. Better, now? Formed in 1968, Led Zeppelin took rock to a level that is thus far unsurpassed. Although Plant hasn’t sung ‘Stairway to Heaven’ for a while, he’s kept busy with solo work and some brief stints in other bands. Lately he’s been teaming up with Bluegrass singer Alison Kraus. They released their album, Raising Sand in 2007 and in March of 2008 it went platinum.
August 21st - Kim Cattral (featured right) has sex at age 52. Cattral finally has a chance to relax and celebrate her birthday after the hype of the Sex & The City: The Movie mania. Her role as free-loving Public Relations [relations..wink wink] agent Samantha Jones has defined her career. Before she was Samantha she starred in 80’s films Police Academy and Mannequin.
August 22end - Tori Amos’s music is often labeled Alternative Rock, whatever that means. Her songs often address issues of feminism, religion and sexuality. She is often a social commentor and co-founder of RAINN, The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. Her song, “Me and a Gun” is about her own experience of being raped. Her work hits close to home and is real and powerful. After working with record companies for 20 years, Amos left Epic records in May, 2008 and is now working independently. Her upcoming projects include recording a duet with David Byrne of the Talking Heads for his own album, Here Lies Love, due in spring of 2009.
August 23rd - Take yourself out to the ball game, go sing in the rain; it’s Gene Kelly’s birthday. Posthumus, yes, but still worth paying homage to one of Hollywood’s founding faces. Kelly (featured right) was an All-American singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer and producer. He’s probably best known for his Singin’ in the Rain performance but Kelly’s done heck of a lot more than that [The Three Musketeers, anyone?]. He was a driving force in Hollywood musicals, while they lasted. Kelly passed away in 1996, but we’ll always remember him for his style and charisma on the silver screen.
August 24th -Â Marlee Matlin may be a child of a lesser God but as an actress and Hollywood star she is highly favored. Her role in Children of a Lesser God put her on the map, she won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role and to date, she hold the record for the youngest actress to hold the title. She’s guest starred in many sitcoms over the years including Seinfield, Desperate Housewives, CSI: New York, ER and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She wowed audiences all over the world with her dancing skills on season six of Dancing With the Stars. For two seasons she appeared on The L Word as a lesbian artist who worked at the university where lead star Jennifer Beals’ character teaches. She brought even more diversity to the gay community on the show as a Deaf person, portraying Deaf people as functional and capable.
