- Seven Southern Cali men arrested on suspicion on child porn - Seven men were arrested today on suspicion of possessing child pornography, following an eight-month investigation by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. If convicted of each defendant could face up to 10 years in federal prison. Those charged include Gary Samuel Cochran, 50, of Huntington Beach, previously convicted of child molestation and possession of obscene materials depicting children engaged in sex acts; Evan Craig Stephens, 36 of Upland, a registered sex offender; George Tyler Farmer, 39, of Oxnard, previously convicted of molesting a 6-year-old child; and Eric David Lacey, 48, of Hollywood.
- Ex-police officer arrested at bank robbery - Vincent Cantu, 44, a retired Pasadena police officer was arrested in connection with a La Habra bank robbery. He was arrested after police spotted him driving away from the Banco Popular at 401 E. Whittier Blvd. that had just been robbed at 11:15 a.m. It was unclear whether cash was recovered from Cantu’s car, Knapp said. No one was injured during the robbery and arrest, she said. The Polite Bandit struck the Banco Popular at 12333 S. La Mirada Blvd. in La Mirada on May 25 and Aug. 28, 2006, and the Banco Popular at 3160 Colima Road in Hacienda Heights on Nov. 23, 2006. Witnesses came up with the name Polite Bandit because they said the robber apologized to bank tellers, thanked them and said he was only trying to feed his children.
- Man shot in Baldwin Hills Stand-Off - LAPD shot a man when he allegedly stabbed a SWAT officer with scissors after barricading himself inside an office at the Wal-Mart in Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza mall. Special Weapons and Tactics officers responded to 4101 S. Crenshaw Blvd. at about 1:20 p.m. Monday and found the man, an African American about 40 years old, barricaded inside. When SWAT officers entered the office at 6:25 p.m., the man allegedly stabbed an officer in the hand and at least one officer fired, wounding the man, who was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. His name and condition had not been released this morning. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The injured SWAT officer was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition.
- Photographer suspected of sexual assault - Miguel Angel Barrera, 44, who lived in Chino Hills, is suspected of posing as a photographer and assaulting three victims, including a 14-year-old girl, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to rape and other charges. He was arrested Aug. 14 on suspicion of sexually assaulting three females, 14-23 years old, in the North Hollywood area over the past two years. He pleaded not guilty today to nine counts, including forcible rape, sodomy by use of force, lewd act on a child, oral copulation of a person under 18 and using a minor for a commercial sex act. He allegedly approached women and handed out business cards, talking up his show business connections and offering to photograph them for print and commercial ads. He then took them to motels in Studio City, where he photographed them and sexually assaulted them
