Tonight on TV: Food Detectives, Generation Kill, The Rutles

August 19th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

Just a few more weeks of summer which means brand new nightly TV is just around the corner. Unfortunately for readers of Cityzine, it means only a few more weeks of this column. Chin up, there’s still some great picks below.

Olympic Games

  • NBC has Track & Field, Gymnastics, Cycling, and Diving at 8:00 while it’s nothing but Softball on CNBC at 9:00.

Reality Rundown

  • This is the tenth season of “Big Brother”. Tenth. That’s astonishing. Tonight it’s like any other episode with a zany challenge but the added wrinkle of the veto meeting being held. Join the voyeurism tonight at 9:00.
  • If last night’s return of “The Hills” didn’t satisfy your urge for faux-reality shows about dumb rich people, then you’ll be able to quench that thirst with a double shot of “Baldwin Hills” tonight on BET. First, Gerren is excited about the premiere of her movie; Justin urges Gerren to confront her feelings about Moriah; Sal interviews for an intership; Staci reveals she is pregnant. Then Justin wants to reconnect with his estranged father; Lor’Rena and Aunjel realize things are changing; Ashley throws a pool party; Staci “sees” her baby. The fun starts at 10:00.

News & Docs

  • Ted Allen of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” is just incredibly charismatic and his show on The Food Network, “Food Detectives” is a hoot to watch. Tonight Ted examines the hazards of swallowing gum and the cleanliness of after dinner mints at restaurants. Finally, practical television. Catch it tonight at 9:00.
  • Did you ever want to know how everything, every species, every animal in the history of the world had sex? No? Well too bad, because tonight on “Evolve” they’ll explore just that. The show posits that sex is the ultimate survival skill for animals on earth and examines intercourse among dinosaurs, insects, pandas and even humans. The naughty, naughty fun begins at 10:00 on The History Channel.

Scripted Bliss

  • I’m going to go ahead and proclaim this the worst night for scripted television in the history of mankind. Why? Because the only new scripted programming tonight is a new episode of “Eureka” on SciFi at 9:00. Ouch.
  • Instead, I’ll take the chance to once again trumpet the virtues of “Generation Kill”. The Iraq War miniseries about the 1st Marine Battalion airs episodes 4-6 tonight on HBO starting at 9:00. The fourth part is called “Combat Jack”. Guess what that means.

Free Movie of the Night

  • “This is Spinal Tap” may be the funniest music movie ever made, but the film ranking a close second airs tonight at 9:30 on VH1 Classic. It’s Eric Idle’s brilliant Beatles parody “The Rutles: All You Need is Cash”. Catch the adventures of Dirk, Stig, Barry and Nasty as they play their hits like “Get Up and Go” and “Let’s Be Natural”.

Remember to check back every day for your guide through the summer TV jungle.
