I apologize in advance. Tonight is a pretty grim night for television. You’re probably better off going to a movie or digging into your DVDs, but I’ll do my best to save you from a night of boredom should you decide to stick with the tube.
Olympic Games
- Luckily the Olympics are still going so this night isn’t a complete bust. Tonight at 8:00 NBC has Track & Field, Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball and Cycling. The highlight of which has to be the fastest man in the history of the planet, Usain Bolt, competing in the semifinals of the men’s 200M. There’s more Track & Field available on CNBC starting at 9:00.
Reality Rundown
- Probably the best thing of the evening is RuPaul serving as a guest judge on Project Runway at 9:00 on Bravo. I told you pickings were slim.
- Elsewhere in reality is a new installment of HBO’s “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Dallas Cowboys” at 10:00. It’s more of the same as the season draws closer and players start getting cut from the roster.
News & Docs
It’s come to this: The two best shows in this category is a pair of monstrous series on the History Channel.
- At 9:00, “MonsterQuest” takes a look at the Monster of Whitehall, upstate New York’s version of Bigfoot. The only difference is that it supposedly makes a sound like a woman shrieking.
- Then at 10:00 “Jurassic Fight Club” looks at a prehistoric watering hole in Utah that became a colossal deathtrap for many dinosaur species who fell prey to predators like the allosaurus and ceratosaurus. Save me.
Scripted Bliss
Devotees will recall yesterday’s lamentation at their being only one new scripted series on last night. Well, this evening it’s worse. There’s absolutely no new scripted programming whatsoever.
- Rather than again trumpeting “Generation Kill” (tonight at 8:30 on HBO) I’ll point you to a documentary about one the best scripted programs of all time.
- Starting at 8:00, catch a 2-hour rundown of the 101 Most Unforgettable SNL Moments and drift away to a time when people on TV spoke words written down ahead of time.
Free Movie of the Night
- In the spirit of the bad evening of TV, we’ll go guilty pleasure with tonight’s movie. On Lifetime, it’s “Night of Terror” a film about a psycho killer hunting down a family during a relentless storm. It’s Lifetime, so you know this will be the most melodramatic serial killer movie you’ve ever seen. Now that’s saying something.
Remember to check back every day for your guide through the summer TV jungle.
