Top of The Billboard: Rhiana, Chris Brown, Paper Planes

August 21st, 2008 Written by: Big Al, the gal· No Comments

There’s been some eventful changes on Billboard’s Hot 100 this week! She-who-kissed-a-girl-and-shall-not-be-named dropped down to the third spot and replacing her at number one is the lovely Rhianna with ‘Disturbia.’ Unless you’re my dog, Cheerio, you can’t see my happy dance that I’m doing it in the privacy of my own house right now as I revel in joy.  Rhianna also makes the Top 5 twice with ‘Take a Bow’ at number four.

Chris Brown is holding his own at number two with ‘Forever.’ Brown is young and hot, while his lyrics are not that creative or original it’s a sure-fire way to get a party jumping. It’s gonna be me and you on the dance floor, double your pleasure, double your fun…

I think I can speak for my new friend Liana and myself when I say how thrilled I am to see M.I.A.’s ‘Paper Planes’ move up eleven spots in one week. She went from number 16 to number 5 in a week. That’s eleven spots in seven days. That’s like, more than one spot a day! ‘I Kissed a Girl’ made it at number 76 when it first debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100d. After several weeks it went up to the number two and has since been at No.1 for almost two months. Let’s hope that [with hindsight in my favor to support this theory] quality ['Paper Planes'] takes some time to gain recognition when you have to beat out meaningless quantity [girls kissing in multiple numbers]. ‘Paper Planes’ debuted over six months ago, [SIX months, people] on Februrary 11, 2008 and is just now making it to the Top 5. It just goes to prove that sex will always sell before politics. I could deign enough to say that it is a good thing that sex is selling even with homosexual behavior referenced, but still; if we’re being P.C. here, sex is sex. Politics still make people uncomfortable, “Already going to hell, just pumping that gas.” Shh! Look! Girls!
