Whether or not you choose to believe it, not everyone in Los Angeles owns a car. I can list a number of reasons why: (1) car notes are too expensive; (2) car insurance is too expensive; (3) gas is too expensive. Did I mention the number of uninsured motorists driving around? You might as well be handing your car keys over to said drivers, because if you get into an accident and you’re not sufficiently covered - just say goodbye to any potential summer-farewell celebration or a splurge towards an autumn wardrobe.
Plenty of motorists and pedestrians have gone from novice to expert when it comes to public transportation, having incorporated bus and railway systems into their daily routine - which must be working, as I haven’t heard updated news reports on any worsening of the 101/405 interchange. But what about the occasional rider?
The aim of this series is to personalize Los Angeles, to enlighten anyone who is curious about local transportation, and to realize the need of areas that might require more local service, making the city more accessible in respects to its far-reaching nature. If you’ve had trouble finding a parking space near the El Capitan Theater, if you’d like to visit a number of art galleries or museums Downtown without the traffic, or if you’ve had a little too much to drink and would rather ease off your high in an underground vessel than get behind the wheel (let’s hope so), we’ll also be making note of events, venues, or local hangouts by bus and rail stations - with suggestions wholeheartedly welcome.
So this week, let’s get you out of the house and into a couple of situations with the goal of heightening your senses, brought to you by the Metro Red Line:
- Art Exhibition: Marlene Dumas - “Measuring Your Own Grave” | now until September 22, 2008 | MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) - Map | Metro Red Line, Civic Center Station - walk west on 1st Street towards Grand, then south on Grand - you will not miss MOCA from across the street of the majestic Walt Disney Concert Hall.
