Concert Review: Eagle Winged Palace at Tangier

August 30th, 2008 Written by: Brian McConnell· 2 Comments

So often the word “unique” is used to describe a new band or artist but rarely is the word as applicable as it is to Eagle Winged Palace.  Comprised of Cashew, Michelle, Mimi, Karma, Sterling (this being her first live performance with the group) and Cashew’s wife, Uncle Rhea, Eagle Winged Palace are as hauntingly unique as some of the names of its participants.  Originally part of The Prix, Cashew has called upon the help of his friends and his wife: beautiful women who each bring something incredibly special to the group.

Not only does Eagle Winged Palace draw upon such unconventional inspiration like ghost stories and strange tales to create their songs, they also bring those inspirations to life through their onstage wardrobe, ambiance and the overall presentation of their music.  The heavy use of fog machines and the truly clever usage of oddly appropriate backdrop images like dancing skulls and haunted mansions compliment the music in a way that the audience can not help but appreciate.

While there is close attention paid to highly creative and thought provoking details, none of it detracts from what is going on onstage at the core of this group: the creation of amazingly beautiful music. Each member of Eagle Winged Palace has an exceptional voice and each seems dually talented with regards to the instruments they play.  Cashew didn’t simply put beautiful girls on stage with him, he formed a group of modelesque beauties whose voices, like Sirens, make you feel as though you are headed somewhere dangerous but are willing to go wherever such music may take you.

So many independent bands on the scene these days seem to try and sound like an independent band.  Eagle Winged Palace embraces what is exciting about indie music: it’s ability to excite the listener with a whole new definition of what is music.  Angelenos should be proud to house such a fantastically phantasmal group.  Don’t miss your opportunity to check these guys out.

Thanks for mentioning “the heavy use of fog machines…” but, it was just one smaller machine in my collection.
