Farmers Market Series: Westchester

September 1st, 2008 Written by: Shelby Chambers· No Comments

The Westchester Farmers Market
Wednesdays, 8:30am - 1:00pm
Westchester Park, Lincoln and La Tijera

I was expecting the Westchester market on Lincoln to be generic and visit-worthy only for the surrounding community. While its modest size and weekday hours might gear it more toward proud Westchster-ers, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that this market was actually a quite the little gem worth checking out. Not only did they have the usual produce and the like, the Westchester farmers market upped the ante with a few unique offerings, with a fraction of the crowds of more popular markets.

This market had every base covered as far as produce goes, and even boasted some specialization that you don’t usually find at these smaller markets. Mark Boujikian Farms focused on grapes of every sort, all of which were beautiful and well priced. He even had seedless Zante currants, a fruit I had never heard of in my life, nor seen at any other market. In fact, there has been a noticeable lack of grapes at farmers markets, even though we are smack in the middle of their late summer season.

The most astonishingly huge peaches known to man can be bought from Scott Family Farms at the Westchester market. Like, scary huge; so huge I did not buy one because I was a little suspicious as to why they were so huge. In fact, all of their fruit was suspiciously large, but at least you get more for your money. Also impressive was the quality and volume of corn at each booth, usually priced at an unbeatable three for $2.00.

If you want freshly made guacamole without getting green avocado smash all over your fingers, Atkin’s Nursery sells both avocados and their delicious guac, both of which you can sample at their booth, complimentary chip and all.

Aside from the produce, the Westchester market had several prepared food options, making it ideal as a shopping destination on your Wednesday lunch hour. Freshly made papusas, Korean, and Peruvian dishes were available, but the best smells were coming from the rotisserie spinning chicken by Grill Masters, sold with potatoes roasted beneath the chicken. You can also get sausages to go by Dray’s BBQ Co.

These smaller markets often have surprises in the entrepreneurs they are able to host, usually in the form of boutique chocolate cookies or dog treats. Unique to the Westchester market was a lady smart enough to ride the wave of anti-plastic bag popularity by offering homemade cloth grocery bags in various sizes at smallish prices.

While this market was smallish and probably of most use only to the immediately surrounding community, it was packed full of quality surprises that should hopefully secure its longevity. Another added benefit is that it’s not far off the 405, and is much easier to access during the busy lunch hour than more popular markets like those on 3rd Street or in Downtown LA. It is immediately adjacent a park, which means you can shop, eat lunch in a quiet setting, and park for free, a dying convenience in these parts.
