Dodger Beat: Dodgers Closing In

September 5th, 2008 Written by: Anthony· No Comments

With 22 games left in the season it is now do or die time for the Dodgers.  They currently sit 1.5 games out of first place, behind the D-Backs of course.  They start a crucial three game series against those first place D-Backs and they have to sweep if not, at least win two out of the three games.  If the Dodgers end up sweeping the series it will vault them into a 1.5 game lead.  If they win two of three they will be only .5 games back of the D-Backs which is better than 1.5.

The end of the season is near and what better way to make up ground on the first place team than to beat the first place team.  Not only is this series important because they are playing the D-Backs, but after this series the Dodgers go on a long road trip.  They will be on a 10 game road trip and it is always harder to win on the road than at home.  The road trip will consist of the Padres, Rockies and the Pirates.

With their last win the Dodgers are now sitting at 70-70 record or .500.  If the Dodgers do make the playoffs, but have a .500 or sub .500 record would that really be any reason to celebrate?  The NL West just keeps proving to the league and the fans that they are the worst division in baseball.  The first place D-Backs are only three games over .500, that is just pathetic.  The winner of the NL West will head into the playoffs with a worse record than the WIld Card winner and that is just a sad situation.  Usually the WIld Card team is the team with the worst record in the playoffs, but not when the NL West is involved.

Make the playoffs or don’t make the playoffs it doesn’t really matter because the NL West Champions really have no chance against the WIld Card winner let alone the other division champs.  Anything can happen once a team makes it to the post season, but it will indeed be a miracle if the NL West Champs even make it out of the Division Series.
