Know Your LA Bands: Sharon Temple

September 9th, 2008 Written by: Seraphina· No Comments

LA.CityZine brings you artist, Sharon Temple, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. She may be small but her voice will topple you over with one listen. This sassy little sprite is full on electronica rock with lyrics that are anything but bashful. Bragging about “too many men, so little time,” and the ruckus she’s about to cause with those dirty beats, you can’t help but notice her attitude and style, not to mention hair color, is reminiscent of Blondie. Managing to strut as she rocks, Sharon Temple is bringing the seductive electronica back to the rock scene without degrading the great indie essence.

You can catch her next show this month at Safari Sams. The modern Debbie Harry takes the stage on September 28th and it all starts at 9:30 pm. Don’t miss out! It’s artists like Sharon who are bringing the electro rock back, not just the sexy back. Until then, psych yourself up with this exclusive interview LA.CityZine was lucky enough to grab.

You classify yourself as Indie/Electro/Rock in terms of genre, but what’s the feeling you want your listeners to get from your music?

I mostly want it to make them feel whatever emotion that song might bring up. Most of the songs are fun dance club songs. So, of course, I’d love it if you just start grooving to the rhythm. Although I do have down-tempo songs that are little more introspective on love and life.

Did you know that there is an actual Sharon Temple that is a national historical site and museum in Canada?

Yeah…its actually a “Temple of Peace.” What’s cool about it is that unlike the other Christian practices at the time who didn’t allow music, theirs revolved around it. What I find so ironic is when you Youtube my video it’s in the middle of all these religious videos. My song is called “Holy Ground” and it’s about having sex on the roof of a church!

How did you hook up with producer, Marc Jordan?

Through Craigslist…I was on a quest to collaborate with someone.

What part of LA are you from?

Echo Park.

How has living in LA affected you musically?

How has it not?

What three songs would you have to have on a dance party mix?

My three would be: “Wolf Like Me” by TV on the Radio, “The Seed” by The Roots, and “The Rover” by Led Zeppelin.

Who would be in your top three for bad ass women in rock?

That’s a hard one cause I’m more a fan of guy bands, but if I have to name three I guess it’d be: Siouxsie Sioux, Tina Turner, Blondie… plus Mary J. Blige. I guess it wasn’t as hard as I thought.

Electronic music has really made a huge comeback in the past few years. Why do you think this is so?

In my opinion, it’s because rock and electronic has fused together. It’s not just a couple guys with a computer and a microphone as much anymore. Now, bands are combining organic elements with digital. For instance you’ll have live instruments playing rock riffs, along with the synth sounds which in turn brings the digital alive!

What LA band are you really digging right now?

It’s a tie between Neon Neon and Spindrift.

Dead or alive. 5 acts you would have play with you at a festival.

I can’t just name five. Led Zeppelin , White Stripes, Janes Addiction, U2, AC/DC (with Bon Scott), The Doors (early years)… Okay, I’m really a rocker at heart.

Quick Fire Round:
What is your favorite drink?

Raspberry lemon drop.

Where’s a good place to people watch in LA?

Sunset Junction and The Echoplex.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

The chocolate cake at “Flore” in Silverlake.

Jello or pudding snack packs?

Depends on who’s involved.

What’s the one thing you will always have unconditional love for in LA?

The music scene.

What was the last song you played on your iPod or in your car?

Sex on Fire by “Kings of Leon.”

Tell us one thing we probably don’t already know about you.

I like to sleep in LATE.
