Music News: Britney at the VMAs, Coachella, Get Up Kids…

September 10th, 2008 Written by: Brian· 2 Comments

Due to the fact that we will all soon die because of the Hardon Collider in France, let’s all get through the music news in an efficient, orderly?manner before saying goodbye to our loved ones and pets.

Britney Sweeps the VMA’s

While it’s kinda stupid to get angry at an awards show that is not really about awards but instead just a place to be seen, I still have to ask you the following questions: Were any of you fine readers able to sit through the entire MTV Video Music Awards show Sunday night? While it was a slight improvement over last years Las Vegas abortion, this years show felt about as comfortable and exciting as a Sarah Palin book club meeting.

Britney Spears was the big winner winning Moonmen for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Video of the Year for her, ummm, quasi- music video for “Piece of Me”. The awards weren’t really too much of a surprise, though, as the show seemed essentially a vehicle for Britney’s “Coming out party”. While the (once) troubled singer did not perform following last years debacle, she did open the show with a skit co-staring Superbad’s Jonah Hill, and a 15-second introduction that was read quickly from a teleprompter.

Host Russell Brand seemed to be on the cusp of being funny during the entire show, but never seemed to cross that line as most of the jokes fell flat with the audience who at most times looked confused and detached in the make shift studio. Most of the performances, such as Pink’s pyro filled “So What, The Jonas Brothers “Lovebug”, Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” and Paramore’s “Misery Business”, were done theatrically with an emphasis on camera angles and special effects. Besides Britney, other award winners included Linkin Park, Lil’ Wayne, Death Cab for Cutie and h Cab for Cutie and Gnarls Barkley.

Coachella Moved Up

The Smiths or Stone Roses will reunite, I have some interesting news regarding which weeks to request off for next April.

As reported by OC Register music god Ben Werner, while the festival, which is celebrating it’s tenth anniversary next year, usually takes place the final weekend of April, Coachella 2009 will see the show moved up to the weekend of April 17-19. We await official word from Goldenvoice, but the word seems to be spreading regarding the date change from some pretty reliable sources.

So why move up the festival? While it may be due to our imminent death from the French Super Collider, the real answer probably falls in to?one of two categories: 1) Logistics and money with the city of Indio or 2) one hell of a headliner that could only be secured that week. And trust me, to move this fest up one week it would really have to be some type of music god. Someone huge like The Smiths or The Rolling Stones or, my personal guess, U2. The official lineup, as well as on sale info should be announced in late January. Until then, feel free to spread your speculation freely on cyberspace.

The Get Up Kids To Reunite

There has been rumors recently that seminal indie-rock band The Get Up Kids, who broke up two years ago after half a dozen albums, might be getting together in the new year to celebrate the band’s ten year anniversary. These rumors were finally confirmed last week by Reggie and the Full Effect front man and Get Up Kids keyboardist James Dewees during a Reggie show in Chicago. According to Mr. Dewees, the band will be getting back together for a spring tour. No further details have been announced, but this is good news for anyone who has been patiently waiting for another opportunity to hear “Holiday” live.

In related news, Dewees stated that this is, in fact, will not the final Reggie and the Full Effect tour.?James stated that the bands current “Farewell Tour” is, in fact, modeled in the vein of KISS’s “farewell” tours where the band continues to tour and that the title of the tour was just a way to get people intrigued. Even with my eminent death, that makes me very happy.

Noel Gallagher Attacked in Canada

In the “I’m shocked, but not really all that surprised” category, Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher was assaulted by a fan Sunday onstage during a headlining set on Toronto’s Virgin Festival (frankly I’m more surprised that Amy Winehouse wasn’t involved in this news story).

The band was performing the 90’s classic “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory” when a male emerged from the back of the stage and ran towards an unsuspecting Noel and pushed him in the back. Noel fell to the stage while the unknown man was tackled by the bands crew onstage as he ran towards singer Liam Gallagher. The assailant was arrested and eventually charged.

Oasis stopped the song and left the stage for 5 minutes before returning and finishing the show. Noel “fell heavily onto his speaker monitor” and was taken to a local hospital “to be examined for a suspected fractured rib and ligament damage.”

The band postponed their next scheduled show in London, Ontario. Oasis is currently on a tour of Canada and the Northern U.S. in support of their upcoming album “Dig Out Your Soul”.

Could this be the beginning of a global panic brought on by the Super Collider? Stay tuned…

Ah, Coachella in the spring. A nineteen-year-old me won tickets from KROQ in 2004. . . good times. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to afford tickets or time off to go since - but thanks for the news on the dates; all I need to know is the line-up - hopefully worthy - and then I’d be willing to fork up some of my savings.
