Hard work pays off and no one knows it better than Pittsburgh band, The Morning Light. This self-described rock/pop band have become pros at getting their music out there to the masses whether it has been on tour or through their MySpace. Just getting off a tour with The Hush Sound, they’re already off on another tour with acts such as The Rocket Summer. It’s not hard to believe this when they’ve not only got their act together so well but their tunes are well crafted with melodies you’ll find yourself humming later.

Success with their past tours along with their well received EP, The Sounds Of Love, The Morning Light is now getting ready to release their full length self-titled album on September 23rd. However if you go to their MySpace, you can pre-order a special album pack which includes the CD, an exclusive t-shirt and a sticker. Don’t miss out! These guys are blowing up.

They also happen to be playing LA this Saturday, September 13th - tomorrow! You can catch their show with The Rocket Summer at The Henry Fonda Theatre (map) starting at 7:00pm! Until then, check out the inside sccop I got with The Morning Light’s drummer, Matt Colussy. Enjoy!

So much has happened for you guys within the last year. What were you guys doing before you guys formed this band?

Well, all of us have been playing in different local Pittsburgh bands before we started this band. We all knew each other from growing up in the Pittsburgh music scene. So when it was time to find members we already knew each other, which made it easy.

The music scene within Pittsburgh is steadily growing. How much has Pittsburgh, itself, affected you as a band?

It’s actually a strange thing for us when it comes to playing Pittsburgh. When we started this band we immediately started touring so we never really spent a lot of time playing shows around town. So even though Pittsburgh is our hometown there are some other places around the country where we actually draw more people. But we still have tons of pittsburgh pride. Go steelers!

How was touring with The Hush Sound?

The Hush Sound is easily one of our favorite bands we’ve ever toured with. Being on tour with them taught us a lot about just being a better band. It was a great tour with absolutely great people.

You’ve just started on another tour with The Rocket Summer. What are you most excited for in regards to this tour?

This will be the biggest tour we’ve ever done, so that alone is really exciting. But I think we’re all just looking forward to meeting all the bands and making new friends. Also, our new record is being released while were on this tour so that’s going to be really exciting as well.

Where does the origin of your name, The Morning Light, come from?

Honestly, there really isn’t any meaning behind the name. We just needed to come up with something and the morning light was the overall favorite.

All of your merchandise is very colorful emanating almost a psychedelic pop feeling. How did the designs for all of your merch come about?

We’ve had a lot of merch designs over the past year or so but most of them are designed by our friends who are really talented at design and art. Most of the time we’ll just have whoever is designing the shirts or cd art just listen to our music and that’s usually what they come up with. All of us are huge fans of older music from the 60’s and 70’s, so we’re always into stuff that looks like something from those eras.

You recently had a contest where all your fans could submit a video of themselves dancing to your song, “Honest.” Did you guys really watch all of them? Did you get any freaky submissions from any crazies?

Haha, well there were a lot of submissions but we actually did get to see almost all of them. Some were crazier than others but none of them were freaky or really weird. We’re just happy that we have great fans that will participate and have a good time with our contests.

What’s your favorite track off the album?

Tough question. We all have our own favorites but, personally, mine might be the first track called, “Wake Up.”

What’s your favorite song to play live?

Any of our new songs are really fun to play but I also really like playing the older songs that our fans sing along with. Right now, I’d have to say my favorite song to play is “Honest.”

What’s one thing you want all your fans to know?

Haha. I have no idea. I need a new laptop so if anyone has an extra one laying around, hit me up.

With all of the contests held and all the videos you post, it seems like the online phenomena has helped you out. However, some music acts scorn anything online or digital. What is your take on this issue?

The internet has helped us out tremendously and without it, we probably wouldn’t be as far as we are. But I can see how some bands disagree with online promotion and digital releases. We sometimes wish it was like it used to be before the internet. It seems like things were more straight forward clear cut. It can be annoying always having to make update videos or making sure were getting enough plays on myspace. It can feel like were on a reality show sometimes with the way people want to know everything about you. But with that being said, the internet has brought a lot of good to our band so we can’t knock it too hard.

Quick Fire Round:
What have you eaten too much on tour?

Crunchwrap supreme from tacobell.

What foods could you never get sick of?

Does coffee count?

Coke or Pepsi?

Coke.

Who’s hotter - Sarah Palin (McCain’s VP choice) or Michelle Obama?

Sarah Palin.
