Ticket Give-Away: DeVotchKa

September 15th, 2008 Written by: Mali· 15 Comments

***Update: And the winners are… Jason Lelea and Juan! Congrats, you’ve both won two tickets to their show at the Fonda and a free copy of their CD!

Many of you may remember them from the film “Little Miss Sunshine” or possibly “Til the End of Time.” DeVotchKa, is definitely a band to watch out for. Their music is an amalgamation of so many different ideas, presented in a clear and beautiful way. Their stage is quite literally packed with instruments from a sousaphone, accordion, piano, violin, a bouzouki, an upright bass, percussion, a trumpet, drums and a Theremin. I’m sure that if you could come up with another instrument, they’d be happy to learn how to play it and use it at their next show.

I have to admit, I didn’t know who DeVotchKa was when I first heard the name, but the second I started listening, I was intrigued. It’s refreshing to find music that makes you stop and listen, that is inspiring, uplifting, and most of all interesting.

So, in order to honor these AMAZING musicians. We’ll be giving away two pairs of tickets to the show at the El Rey on the 16th and two copies of their CD “A Mad & Faithful Telling.”  All you have to do to be entered in a random drawing to win is…

I love the accordion. My mom, who is completely awesome, gave me her old Ziehharmonika accordion that she had from Germany in the late 60s. I remember when I was a kid, she’d always play it late at night and keep the whole family up.

Now when I hear The Who’s “Squeeze Box” I always laugh a little because it reminds me of my eccentric family.

“Mommy’s got a squeeze box, daddy never sleeps at night!”

I absolutely adore the piano and the violin. Although I’ve never gotten the chance to actually play these two instruments, I still have the burning desire to make lovely and mesmerizing music by touching the keys of a piano or pass the bow on the strings of a violin.

It’s only reasonable that I would be in love with DeVotchKa for soothing my ears…

I always grew up and around the piano. From the time when my mother played “Moonlight Sonata” when I was a baby to when I fell in love with the piano all over again when my girlfriend played Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”, the piano has been a part of my life.

The voice. Often overlooked because it hides in the windpipe, shoots through the mouth which is sometimes crayoned in lipstick, the human voice tickles my capillaries like no other instrument, except maybe the organ, but that’s contingent on the player being Ray Manzarek.

My favorite instrument is the violin. It’s the only instrument that has ever made me cry. It conveys emotion more powerfully than words.

My favorite instrument is the banjo. I’m not going to lie, I’m a hillbilly from the backwoods of Tennessee. I don’t really understand Los Angeles kids. You know, the hipsters. Everyone wears pants too tight, beards too big, and styles too extreme. It’s like I got caught in a time machine with a bunch of inbreds from the 60s. Luckily I have my banjo to ward off them crazy mustaches.

My favorite instrument is the dulcimer. It is one of the most under utizilized tradional world instruments today.

The reason I love it is because it gives me flashbacks of going to Coney Island when I was a kid. I found that place to be really creepy and trashy, but I love the dirtiness of it all.

The dulcimer was played in a Voltar fortune telling machine.

When a song you’ve heard for the 1001th time still makes your blood tingle like tyhe first time it changed your life…

My favorite instrument are the hands. You can do so much with your hands. Do so percussion at a crazy drum circle or along with your favorite band at their concert or in your your car against the steering wheel while stuck in traffic. Your hands will strum any stringed instrument. You need them to play any wind instrument. You need them to play a harmonica, or theramin, any instrument really. They come in most handy when you are playing the human body to play the song of love…..
    Cheers, Val
