LA’s own Greek Theater is one of the most unique outdoor venues where you can go see a show. It’s also been named best outdoor small theater in the U.S. Seating just over 5000 people, it offers an intimate setting and state of the art jumbo screens for all you who forget to bring your binoculars. Located just Northeast of Hollywood in Griffith Park it’s easy to get to and quite inexpensive if you don’t mind taking Metro.
This past Friday night the Greek played host to one of Americas last remaining singing Icons. Starting out some 60 years ago He had the stage name Joe Barry, this of course didn’t suit Bob Hope who liked what he saw in the young up and comer. With his real name Anthony Dominik Bennedetto, a little to long for the marque, Hope shortened it to the name the so many fans around the world have come to know as Tony Bennett. The rest is History.
With over 50 million records sold and fifteen Grammy awards to his name, this 82 year old master of song has worked with anyone and everybody in the biz, and shows no sign of slowing down. His Duets album which was only recorded only a few years ago is still regarded as some of his best work. Who else but Bennett could get together Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Sting all on the same album.
As he took the stage in a light Yellow jacket and genuine swagger, the whole audience erupted into a standing ovation before even a single note was song. It sure wouldn’t be the last time that happened. Belting out such classics as, The Way You Look Tonight, Just In Time, I Left My Heart in San Fransisco, and The Best is Yet to Come, Tony managed to captivate everyone in attendance, which ranged from teenagers to seasoned veterans of all colors and sizes . Bennett cannot only still wow a crowd, but can tell you every songwriter who created his massive hit list, gives more than abundant kudos to his four piece band, and just may have let it slip that he’s voting for Obama in the upcoming election. Not to mention he still has a full head of hair. His soothing voice has a unique quality that puts you at ease ,but in a flash can also have you toe tapping along with the rhythm while he holds a note like nobody else.
For almost 90 minutes, this once small time nightclub crooner, showed LA fans why he’s still selling out shows around the world. Covering, Blues, Country, Standards, and Love songs, Bennett showed his range and style that has garnered him fans from all different types of musical genres. In my personal opinion he ranks right up there with Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Nat king Cole said one woman who was on vacation from Australia “he’s just the best”. And as I sat and watched him close out his performance to a standing ovation and two en core’s, this longtime fan couldn’t agree more.
