This week in the literary world revolves quite simply around the bare essentials - opportunities for personal verbal expression, used book sales, and hearing the colorful experiences of recognized talent. We’ve also included directions to a coffeehouse-type establishment in the Valley, in effort to assist you in the ongoing search of somewhere else to read at your leisure, outside of the painfully obvious and over-populated.
- Open Mic | Thursday, September 18, 2008 | 8:00 pm | Tribal Cafe - Map | Poetry, spoken word, and a bevy of beverages - consider it all a less expensive brand of group therapy. For more info, call (213) 483-4458, or email info@tribalcafe.com.
- Used Book Sales | Saturday, September 20, 2008 | 10:00am - 3:00pm | Westchester Library - Map | Atwater Village Branch Library - Map | Two sales for the choosing, offering between 2,000 and 3,500 books priced between twenty-five cents and a dollar. For more info call (310) 348-1096 (Westchester) or (323) 664-1353 (Atwater Village).
- Reading and Discussion | Saturday, September 20, 2008 | 7:30 pm | $10.00 | Beyond Baroque Books - Map | Maureen Cotter - writer, activist, and Deviant Diva of Venice - will turn a few tales loose throughout the evening. For more info, call (310) 822-3006.
- Coral Tree Cafe, Encino | Sunday - Saturday, 7:00am - 10:00pm | (818) 789-8714 | Map | While a tad on the pricey side, the food is tasty, and the cups of tea are so large that you might question whether or not you can really get lost in them. The best places for reading are at the big wooden tables towards the back of the restaurant - broad enough for spreading out homework, newspapers, and all else.
