So in an attempt to both lower my blood pressure and make the world a happier, sunnier place, I’ve decided to forgo my usual “music industry is evil/ Sarah Palin/ Economy” rant and instead give you some deep breathing exercises to lead off my Music News post.
Ready?
Here we go:
Deep breath through your mouth.
Breathe in through your nose.
Hold it…
Think about fluffy bunnies and wacky platypus’
Hold it…
Breathe out.
Feel better? Good, let’s start with the music news.
METALLICA ROCKS! (THE CHARTS)
Despite almost no hype or support from local radio station KROQ (only 100 Days of Metallica,KROQ? Why not 200 or 400 days? Geez KROQ, how about a little support!), Metallica’s new record “Death Magnetic” has debated at #1 on the Billboard charts, despite being released three days later then the other new records on the chart. The well reviewed record (which was released Friday morning instead of the typical Tuesday release date “to accommodate a worldwide release date” i.e. “oh dear, Internet leaks”) sold 490,000 copies in its abbreviate release week, which is actually an improvement over the bands last record “St. Anger” which sold 418,00 copies in its abbreviated first week.
Even though “St. Anger” was about as well received as a cholera outbreak in a turn of the century South American port city, the increase in first week sales is a big accomplishment considering that very few big artists can eclipse their first week sales from previous records anymore. But then again, Metallica isn’t your average band and with many alternative rock radio stations swtiching to an “alternative-metal” format, “Death Magnetic” got more hype then just about any record in the past five years. Watch for the hype machine to continue with the band set to do a full fall/ winter tour. Also, look out for KROQ’s new “Decade of Metallica” promotion beginning January 1, 2010.
GUITAR HERO: WORLD TOUR ANNOUNCES TRACKLIST
If you’re like me, several of your weeknights go according to this schedule:
730pm: Return from girlfriends place.
7:45pm:Make something to eat.
8:15pm: Check e-mail.
8:30pm: Decide to put in Guitar Hero for just one or two songs.
8:45pm: Lose track of time.
10:45pm: Notice time; pretend to care during “Knights of Sedonia” solo.
11:15pm: Put down Guitar Hero game and curse yourself for yet again not getting enough sleep as your alarm is set to go off in six and a half hours.
If you find that you are that type of person you’ll be very excited to again lose sleep for the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour game which is set to be released in late October. Activision has announced an 80-plus song “setlist” which includes the usual mixof old 70s and 80s favorites, with newer hits and just released songs.
This list includes some of the following tracks.

And trust me, there is plenty more where that came from. Gentlemen: start your coffee makers.
TRL R.I.P.
In the “Seriously, I thought that it was already cancelled two years ago” category, MTV’s decade old “Total Request Live” show is about to deliver it’s last scream filled broadcast. The countdown show, which features a mix of interviews, live performances, music videos and celebrity news, was the center of the boy band/ pop-punk/ nu metal universe of the late nineties and helped launch the careers of such artists as N’ Sync, The Backstreet Boys, Limp Bizkit, Britney Spears and Lightning Bolt (the last one was just a joke, but seriously, how awesome would that have been?).
At one time the show was one of the, if not, most important stop on a band’s promotional tour. Recently, though, the show has lost a lot of it’s luster. With boy bands and nu metal going the way of a well run Democratic presidential campaign, the show has not only lost its spot on the pop culture landscape but, more importantly, it’s viewers. According to executive producer Dave Sirulnick, the music video countdown show wwill conclude with a two-hour special on a Saturday afternoon in November. He stated that the show wasn’t necessarily ending for good, but felt that this is ”the right time” to give the show a break. No word on what the show will come back as, but I’m guessing with the way things are going on TV now-a-days it will have something to do with Sarah Palin.
NEW FOUND GLORY SIGNS WITH EPITAPH
After years of hit records, followed by years of falling record sales with major labels, always quality punk-pop-rock artist New Found Glory has signed with seminal indie punk label Epitaph Records. It’s label debate, which is being produced by Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus, should be out by next years Spring thaw.
The Florida born and raised group signed to Drive-Thru Records in 2000, but was upped to MCA records for the bands 2002 hit record “Sticks and Stones” which sold over 850,000 copies in the U.S. In recent years, though, the bands record sales have dropped, mostly due to punk rock’s sales drop off and a general declining in record sales. The band still packs the clubs, though, and is currently touring the US and Europe off their newest movie covers compact disc.
