If you live anywhere near Long Beach, you know the Pike. Even if you aren’t a local, you’ve probably been to the world renowed Aquarium of the Pacific , which is in walking distance. The Pike is a focal point for dining and entertainment in the downtown area. It’s easy to spot, with it’s faux roller coaster structure and real ferris wheel, with rides for two dollars if you’re so inclined.
Not only is there an amusement ride and a fabulous aquarium, there’s plenty of dining opportunities along with entertainment for adults at the Laugh Factory. Restaurants range from the inexpensive to mid range, with such choices as Islands, the Great Steak & Potato Co., California Pizza Kitchen (which is one of my favorites) to P.F. Changs and seafood at Gladstones. Â
Not only are there plenty of eateries, there’s a Cinemark movie theater as well. If you love the Irish, you can always stop in at the Auld Dubliner, a great Irish pub frequented by lots of ex-patriots and offers live music such as Ken O’Malley and the Twilight Lords, who are playing tonight from 10pm to 1:30am.
If you’re into more sedate activities, you can always peruse the tomes and CD’s at Border’s. Or you can walk along the wharf, between the Aquarium and the restaurants, which is always pleasant and possibly romantic, depending on the company, with its views of Rainbow Harbor and the Queen Mary.
If you’re a frequent visitor, you can sign up online for the Pike Passport. Not only do they provide updates on events happening at the Pike, they offer several discount coupons to use while you’re there.
Long Beach has a lot to offer, with great views of the harbor and a variety of dining and drinking choices so all you “LA’ophiles”, come try something new and head down our way!
The Pike is located at:
