Writing in Tights Part II
I truly do enjoy working at UCLA as part of the house staff in Royce Hall, let that be understood, but there are times when even the most patient of ushers gets the sudden desire to shake a patron until their wobbly, selfish head rolls off their shoulders. It is not the silly questions; those we just giggle about later and make an effort to properly and politely answer in the present. It is the incessant refusal to listen to us when we give a reply that is not what you wanted to hear, the attempts to go around our backs and ignore the no-late-seating policy of the company on stage or even the very rude moments when we are verbally abused. This past Tuesday evening showing of King Lear in Royce Hall was one to add to our collection of Royce Hall usher vs. patron stories.

Los Angeles may have had a fire burning under them to survive the past several games and leave winners, but from wherever that heat came – it was gone by Sunday, the 21 October. Chicago Fire was obviously the stronger team, as was apparent in the consistent and frequent attacks they made on the Galaxy goal.
Though the theatrics and drama the Chicago player Blanco brought to the field severely detracted from the team’s play and caused them to squander many chances. Chicago did not convert any of their multiple chances in the 90th minute. Galaxy could not get the desire and passion back up to where it should be for big games such as these. Donovan seemed to be non-existent and connecting passes appeared to be just as invisible as the team’s leader. Thus ends the Galaxy’s hopes for at the very least a spot in the playoffs. Better luck next year boys; hopefully Beckham will be the saviour you wanted to find in him. If not, that’s fine, you have a team to build as one cohesive unit, which is much more commendable (see the Chicago Fire, especially in this match) as opposed to relying on an injury laden superstar.

Sunday is the last chance for the L.A. Galaxy to secure their position for the playoffs after their tie on Thursday against the New York Red Bulls. The tie does mean they still have a chance, albeit an occurrence of which many are skeptical. David Beckham was back for the game yet, as all those who are realistic assumed, his appearance did not suddenly give us a top notch, all pistons firing Galaxy match.

“Lost Angel” is both touching and funny, something so many modern movies try to mimic but so often fail. This is because the heart of modern film is in the wrong place, often losing the simplistic beauty of the heartwarming movie in over-the-top dramatics. Though the plot is simple and fairly easily read, it is a classic little gem that wouldn’t hurt to stock on your shelf for those days when you really just need a reason to feel good.

Let’s hope New York’s mascot really can give them the wings their caffeine laden energy drink claims it can provide. Despite their streak of draws being broken by their defeat of Kansas City, Galaxy is high on their own energy source, we call the winning streak.

L.A. Galaxy meet Toronto FC, Saturday 13 October at the Home Depot Center.
Both teams are in need of a win in this match-up. Galaxy (8-13-6) is in just as tight a bind as Toronto (6-16-6) who sit dead last in the Eastern Conference Standings; as Galaxy is just 6 points away from the eighth and final playoff spot and a win on Saturday will put them all the closer. Yet despite Toronto’s 12-game losing streak that began the 4th of July, it ended this past Thursday October 4, and Galaxy better not be betting on taking on an “easy? team.
With or without David Beckham, Galaxy need to put on a show and gather their win, as they sit 2 points away from the team holding their possible playoff spot, the Colorado Rapids. In fact many counted them out (and still do) of the playoffs due to the manner of their play and, as usual, placing too much hope on the elusive and often non-existent Beckham. Maybe the words “we’re in the playoffs? will get his current knee-injury to heal up in time for the first playoff game.
