Labor Day has come and gone and the fall premieres are set to begin, making this the last week for the Summer TV Picks. Enjoy.
Reality Rundown
- The meanest Brit on television is back. No, it’s not Simon Cowell, it’s Gordon Ramsay of “Hell’s Kitchen”. Fox brings him back tonight for a two-hour premiere of the second season of “Kitchen Nightmares”. On this show, Ramsay rehabs a restaurant in a state of disrepair each episode. He also swears. A lot.
- “House Hunters” is one of the most enjoyable watches in all of reality TV. Tonight it’s all new at 10:00 on HGTV where a prospective buyer looks for a casa closer to her mother. Better than that is the repeat to follow where a SCUBA fanatic looks for a house on the Honduran island of Roatan. Prepare to drool over real estate.

Labor Day has come and gone and the fall premieres are set to begin, making this the last week for the Summer TV Picks. Enjoy.
Reality Rundown
- The CW whips out its second two-hour premiere in as many days as “America’s Next Top Model” returns at 8:00. Watch the skinny people as bitter ex-super models point out their flaws.
- Get one last dose of “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Dallas Cowboys” before the NFL season kicks off this week. Ahhh, the return of NFL football and new TV, fall is so great! The HBO doc continues at 10:00.

Time to lay to rest the endless onslaught of lame network reality filler. And what better to way than taking one last ride on that pain train?
- There are two opportunities tonight as ABC trots out another episode of its inexplicable “Wanna Bet?” series. For those who haven’t watched, also known as Americans, this series features contestants performing wacky stunts while a panel of pseudo-celebrities wager on the outcome. It’s yours at 9:00.
- It wouldn’t be summer without “Big Brother”. The tenth installment of the series is apparently its best ever, at least that’s what the commercials claim. Catch it at 9:00 on CBS before the good shows come back.

Today we’re going to break format on the TV Picks Column. Why? Because the last few days have been so chock full of repeats that viewers are undoubtedly dying for something new, and tonight will deliver with five series premieres!
That’s right; Thursday August 21st gives us the chance to start five new TV obsessions. Granted, every single one is a reality program (as if we didn’t have enough of those) so you won’t get the usual TV pick categories. In case you’re wondering, the Olympics are on at the same time they always are with Usain Bolt going for the gold in the 200M. “Burn Notice” is new on USA at 10:00, and the best free movie is “Superman II” at 8:00 on ION.
Now on with the brand new series!

I apologize in advance. Tonight is a pretty grim night for television. You’re probably better off going to a movie or digging into your DVDs, but I’ll do my best to save you from a night of boredom should you decide to stick with the tube.
Olympic Games
- Luckily the Olympics are still going so this night isn’t a complete bust. Tonight at 8:00 NBC has Track & Field, Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball and Cycling. The highlight of which has to be the fastest man in the history of the planet, Usain Bolt, competing in the semifinals of the men’s 200M. There’s more Track & Field available on CNBC starting at 9:00.
Reality Rundown
- Probably the best thing of the evening is RuPaul serving as a guest judge on Project Runway at 9:00 on Bravo. I told you pickings were slim.
- Elsewhere in reality is a new installment of HBO’s “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Dallas Cowboys” at 10:00. It’s more of the same as the season draws closer and players start getting cut from the roster.

Just a few more weeks of summer which means brand new nightly TV is just around the corner. Unfortunately for readers of Cityzine, it means only a few more weeks of this column. Chin up, there’s still some great picks below.
Olympic Games
- NBC has Track & Field, Gymnastics, Cycling, and Diving at 8:00 while it’s nothing but Softball on CNBC at 9:00.
Reality Rundown
- This is the tenth season of “Big Brother”. Tenth. That’s astonishing. Tonight it’s like any other episode with a zany challenge but the added wrinkle of the veto meeting being held. Join the voyeurism tonight at 9:00.
- If last night’s return of “The Hills” didn’t satisfy your urge for faux-reality shows about dumb rich people, then you’ll be able to quench that thirst with a double shot of “Baldwin Hills” tonight on BET. First, Gerren is excited about the premiere of her movie; Justin urges Gerren to confront her feelings about Moriah; Sal interviews for an intership; Staci reveals she is pregnant. Then Justin wants to reconnect with his estranged father; Lor’Rena and Aunjel realize things are changing; Ashley throws a pool party; Staci “sees” her baby. The fun starts at 10:00.

Olympic Games
Michael Phelps may be out of the pool, but there’s still a lot of Gold to go out in Beijing. Tonight on NBC at 8:00 catch Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball, and Track & Field. In the latter you’ll get the chance to see new fastest man in the world Usain Bolt needs to run the entire 200M in order to set another world record.
- On CNBC it’s Wrestling and Table Tennis starting at 9:00.
Reality Rundown
- After almost an entire summer of being able to flip around the dial without seeing stupid rich people acting stupid, “The Hills” shoves it right back in our face with its season premiere tonight at 10:00. But that’s not all; MTV has found enough benevolence to bring us an entire marathon of past episodes leading up to the big moment. Why pay for a lobotomy when you can get one for free just by watching TV?

According to the L.A. Times, Donald Trump is currently negotiating to buy Ed McMahon’s foreclosed Beverly Hills home from its lender. His plan is to let McMahon continue to live in the home, saying that helping the TV legend would be, “An honor.”
Is that really what this is? An honor? It’s some sort of benevolent act to help a man who’s made millions of dollars with his current financial predicament. This is sort of like feeling charitable for dropping George Clooney the phone number of your hot girlfriend. Rich people shouldn’t need help with money, so why do we feel compelled to listen to their sob stories or even have the urge to help them out?
It has a lot to do with our celebrity culture, of course. A channel that reported on nothing but the whereabouts of Britney, Paris, and Lindsay would probably get great ratings, oh wait, E! already does. But this culture is usually one of malice, one that seeks do deride celebrities rather than elevate them. Why is it different when they’re down on their luck?

August is finally here which means the baseball playoff race is heating up, football is on its way back and, most importantly, the new TV season is almost here. We must soldier on for a few more work weeks until all our favorite shows come back in September to make the drudgery more bearable.
But don’t despair, below are enough good shows for tonight to get you through at least this evening.
Reality Rundown
- “Miami Ink” is back on TLC tonight at 10:00 and celebrates its return with a trip abroad. Yoji takes Bridget and Sidney home to Japan in order to see his mother and rebuild some family ties. Back in Miami, a doctor approaches the tattooed team for help with a young patient.
- Discovery Channel’s incredibly droll “Some Assembly Required” rolls out two new episodes at 8:00 and 8:30. This series takes viewers behind the scenes of how mundane and everyday items are made. Tonight it’s washable crayons and pipe organs followed by Ludwig Drums and Compound Bows. Expect lots of funny quips from co-host Brian Ungar formerly of the Craig Kilborn-era “Daily Show”.
