    MLS: Earthquakes Shake-Off Los Angeles

August 4th, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago · No Comments

Los Angeles was surprised this Sunday by some determined Earthquakes. I’m not talking about a repeat of the natural disaster that struck the L.A. area a week ago. I’m talking about the game between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes where the final score was 3-2 in favor of the Bay Area club. The game belonged to Major League Soccer’s Week 19 and was played in McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, Calif.

The Galaxy needed points in order to ensure a more comfortable spot in the Western Conference. On the other hand, the Earthquakes have collapsed in the season and were looking to accumulate any points to help them get out of last place. Regardless, the SoCal/NoCal rivalry did not disappoint as the game was filled with excitement, offensive plays and beautiful goals.

July 14th, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago · No Comments

Soccer SUPERLIGADS-08-13-06The second edition of the SuperLiga is now underway after the inaugural matches were played over the weekend. Eight teams will battle against each other to win the coveted trophy and the pride of North America.

But what exactly is the SuperLiga?

It may not be as big as the World Cup or the recently played Eurocup. But the SuperLiga is a new and exciting tournament that lets Major League Soccer teams have a chance to play competitive soccer against clubs of a different country.

It’s basically a duel between Mexico and the United States. Four teams from each country competing for the cup. This year the New England Revolution, Houston Dynamo, D.C. United and Chivas USA will represent the United States. Chivas de Guadalajara, who is the inspiration for the creation of Chivas USA, Santos, Atlante and defending champions Pachuca are the Mexican representatives.

MLSDS-08-07-06The Revolution ultimately prevailed on Independence Day. No, I’m not giving you a history lesson on something that occurred 232 years ago. I’m simply talking about Friday’s match between the New England Revolution and the Los Angeles Galaxy where the final score was 2-1 in favor of the Revs.

The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. was the venue of a sellout crowd who witnessed the two top teams of their respective conference battle it out in a very exciting game. Both teams were offensive and displayed a show that would make any firework display seem like child’s play.

The Portuguese have Cristiano Ronaldo, currently considered the best player on the planet. His surrounding cast isn’t too shabby either. With experienced players like Deco, Pepe and Quaresma, Portugal is considered one of the favorites to take it all. But the Germans are a solid and mature team who are used to playing in big stages. Soccer: Los Angeles Loves Lakers, Europe Euphoric with Eurocup

June 12th, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago · No Comments

chivas-usa.jpgWhile in Los Angeles all there is nowadays are the Lakers and their NBA Finals match-up with Boston, in Europe they couldn’t care less. Actually the rest of the world right now is focused in Austria and Switzerland, the co-hosts of the 2008 edition of the Eurocup.

The Eurocup consists of 16 European soccer teams that have made it to this tournament through some arduous qualifying. Such star-filled teams like Italy, France, Portugal and Germany will battle it out to get to the final and eventually be crowned as the champions of Europe. It is basically a “mini” World Cup as some experts call it.

The best soccer in the world is being played right now. With incredible games such as France vs Italy, which is a rematch from the final in the World Cup in 2006, is hard to even blink an eye.

MLS: Identical Score, Opposite Results For L.A. Teams

June 2nd, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago · No Comments

lagalaxy08-06-02Both the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA teams had intense activity over the weekend during Week 10 of the Major League Soccer. The score in both their games was an identical 2-0. Unfortunately for the Galaxy, the score was not in their favor. On the other hand, Chivas USA’s strong performance allowed them to obtain the victory.

It all started on Saturday in Canada where the Galaxy visited a young Toronto FC team. A win for Los Angeles would assure them of the top spot in the Western Conference. Unfortunately for them, Toronto FC came in with a plan to spoil the party.

A nice header by Julius James opened the score for Toronto FC in the 49th minute. The Canadians dominated the game and in the 65th minute the second goal arrived. This time Jeff Cunningham was the man in charge to beat Galaxy goalie Steve Cronin with a nice strike inside the box.
