Raised between Utah and Colorado, Emberly chose to forsake the comforts of city life at an early age and lived in a nest of shrubbery padded with the guard hairs of foxes. Subsisting on grubs and mulberries, she supplemented necessary mineral content by licking mud from creek banks. Emberly was discovered by two hikers at the age of 18, one being a curator at the Whitney Museum; who took her to New York City and fostered her career in art. She has been lauded as one of the most original and influential performance artists of our age. Emberly now resides in Los Angeles where she runs an ESL program for cats.

Robert Rauschenberg
June 28 â August 16, 2008
Artist Reception: Saturday, June 28, 5 - 7 pm
The Lotus Series harkens back to the 1980’s when Robert Rauschenberg launched a worldwide art crusade called the Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange or ROCI. The goal of the project was to create an avenue of understanding between people of different countries through artistic and cultural exchange without political intervention. A six-year exhibition tour led him to Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, China, Japan, Cuba, the former Soviet Union, the former East Germany (East Berlin), and Malaysia.

In June of 1982 Robert Rauschenberg traveled to Jing Xian, China to work in the ancient Xuan Paper Mill. Rauschenberg photographed the sights and surroundings extensively. In 1985, Rauschenberg returned to Beijing, China to exhibit the ROCI project. This second trip to China gave Rauschenberg an additional opportunity to photograph the country. Bill Goldston, Director and Master Printer of ULAE (Universal Limited Art Editions) accompanied Rauschenberg on this trip.

Brooks Salzwedel & John Palmer: Modern Soil
Katherine Wilson: Look at me look at you
28 June â 26 July, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 28, 7:00 â 10:30pm
Black Maria is pleased to announce the opening of “Modern Soil”, an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles based artists Brooks Shane Salzwedel and John Palmer. The exhibition builds on the fight-for-life themes consistent in Salzwedel’s art - nature vs. man-made, prehistoric vs. modern, organic vs. structured, recalling a time past, while remaining firmly planted in the present. Palmer’s works explores landscapes in peril and gives the exhibition contextual layers of introspection and meaning.
With little more than graphite and resin, Salzwedel creates sublime images of nature and industrial development co-existing. Creating an eerie, ethereal tension between the two, while challenging notions of beauty and destruction. Salzwedel’s process and materials themselves lend additional depth to his content. The toxic process of the layered resin is initially overshadowed by the beauty of the trees and plant life it contains.
