Astra Heights
It was an exciting night at Key Club last Wednesday. At 6:30 a red carpet lay on the Sunset sidewalk welcoming supporters and members of the David Lynch Foundation to the fundraising event that would include both musical performances and a silent auction. By around 8:30 the club was jam packed with people sporting David Lynch Foundation shirts, placing bids on clothing articles and artwork (including the featured painting of David Lynch himself), and sipping drinks. Astra Heights was the first band to take the stage, loosening up the club with some Texas grown pop-rock. The following act was 8mm whose lead singer charmed the room with a silky voice and equally smooth moves.

Its title, Disconnected, reflects a detached disenchantment with the stress and complications involved in the hyperconnectedness of the digital age. This disconnection, along with classic love and coming-of-age entanglements, embodies the central theme to the solid debut album of British pop punk band, Beat Union. In exploration of the ups and downs of young adult life, the lyrics’ relevancy to today’s media- and Internet-driven youth culture puts an ultra modern spin on familiar subject matter. Similarly the catchy guitar riffs, enlivening drums, and adamant vocals find a fresh take on a familiar punk rock sound.

On June 24th, Rumspringa released their debut EP, giving L.A. fans who have enjoyed Rumspringa’s Monday night residency at The Echo this month something tide them over until the band comes back again. This funk rock duo utilizes an intriguing melange of musical styles, from ambient blues rock to an almost old-school rap. Singer Joey Stevens probes with a limber rockstar drawl even undertaking a Tom Waits-like raspy growl, emphasized in “Skulls and Phones.” The lyrics, ranging from simple and straightforward to obscure and dismal, effortlessly find their place within the rhythmic groove rolling through each song.
Rumspringa’s EP succeeds in developing six tracks of unique engaging sound that pulls the listener in with a laid-back hip musical vibe. Rumspringa’s synthesis of various musical elements contributes to an alternative rock style similar to what multi-instrumentalist Beck is known and loved for.

The title of Alu’s second album, Lobotomy Sessions, is a fairly blatant indicator that this chanteuse has no intention of entertaining comfortably familiar pop conventions in her music. Lyrics that dabble in realms of mortality, consciousness, and the supernatural effectively transport the listener, along with a unique array of foreign string and wind instruments, to a timeless, dark and magical underworld. While ubiquitously eerie and sultry, her songs are frequently carried by playful tempos and jazzy melodies. Alu’s beautiful and ethereal voice is the distinct leader of the soundtrack to this fantastical journey.
Alu’s songs find the delightful and romantic aspects in otherwise morbid territory. The uplifting “Casket Salesman” is a catchy “graveyard love” song and a perfect accompaniment to the image of a girl in a flowery dress snapping her fingers while skipping through a grassy cemetery as she she sings, “Baby won’t you bury me?” Another plea for affection, “Black Cloud” also employs gloomy lyrical incentive, although the tone of this one is less ironic. Alu’s voice echoes and weaves above a slow marching snare drum beat, low piano, and accordion.
