Whether or not you choose to believe it, not everyone in Los Angeles owns a car. I can list a number of reasons why: (1) car notes are too expensive; (2) car insurance is too expensive; (3) gas is too expensive. Did I mention the number of uninsured motorists driving around? You might as well be handing your car keys over to said drivers, because if you get into an accident and you’re not sufficiently covered - just say goodbye to any potential summer-farewell celebration or a splurge towards an autumn wardrobe.

Works in the realm of cross-hybrid film art will be showcased by over 100 artists (click here for a full list). And if your closeted fanatic is able to name all the icons in this poster, it will be yours - signed by Kevin Smith (co-hosting the event with Scott Mosier) and the artist, Andrew Wilson. For more info, call (323) 937-7088.

For more info, call (818) 238-5620.
- Happy Hour/Anniversary | Monday, August 18, 2008 | 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm | Tinto Tapas - Map | Tinto Tapas invites you to share in celebrating its one-year anniversary with good music, a pleasant ambiance, and an authentic Spanish tapa on the house. For more info, call (323) 512-3095.
- The Best of The Druid Underground Film Festival | Monday, August 18, 2008 | 9:00 pm | All Ages | Pehrspace - Map | Showcasing such shorts as “TV Sabotage” by Kid Mankowitz, April’s Fool by Moises Jimenez, and “Let’s Meat” by Ben Cuevas, this festival is unique in that it is entirely supported by volunteers - no public sponsors, and quite possibly none needed! Nothing beats the final production of an event such as this that is wanted, not force-fed down the public’s throats. Besides, it helps that all the titles sound twisted enough to be thoroughly entertaining. For more info, visit myspace dot com slash Druid Video.
- Grnappletree Website Launch | Friday, August 15th, 2008 | Free with RSVP | 7:00 pm | Fresh Pressed - Map | A gamut of trippy-graphicked tees and strategically-patterned button downs can only be termed “original” so many times; however, Grnappletree.com dares the consumer to select their threads to accentuate themselves - already original. All the more reason to party! Not only will guests be treated to free drinks and music, but the first thirty to arrive will receive free gift bags. For more info, call (213) 489-2836.
- Citizen Savant | Friday, August 15th, 2008 | $15.00 at the door, $10.00 with flier | 10:30 pm | The Mint - Map | Contrary to popular belief, there is plenty of talent outside of the mainstream vortex. Indie band Citizen Savant will be displaying the fruits of their labor - their new EP, “The Man Down” - as a testament to that fact. Guests Adrian Vera, Stereo Fox, Jeff Bruckner, The Ghost Lullaby, and The Dropjoy will take the stage throughout the evening.
- Signing and Discussion | Thursday, August 14, 2008 | Book Soup - Map | Josh Frank signs and presents In Heaven Everything is Fine, a book that delves into the unsolved murder of Peter Ivers (and therefore reopening the case), while paying homage to his influence on pop culture in the 70s and 80s by way of the New Wave Theater - most definitely a welcome, chaotic orchestration. For more info, call (310) 650-3110.
- Bollywood Nights | Monday, August 11, 2008 | 6:00 pm | Nirvana - Map | Samosas, cocktails, and Bollywood films: I know it’s so cliche, but it sure as Hell sounds like Nirvana to me. When the menu itself refers to its appetizers as “foreplay”, you can assume that it’s either the truth or a boost to the establishment’s ego. Do yourself a service and find out. For more info, call (310) 657-5040.
- BaRock the House | Monday, August 11, 2008 | 8:00 pm | suggested donation $15.00 | 21+ | Temple Bar - Map | Ashton and JT of Music Forward Productions have arranged this concert show to raise funds for Presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s campaign, and to keep the public informed on societal and political fronts before the quickly-approaching November 4th election. - Signing and Discussion | Friday, August 8, 2008 | 7:00 pm | Book Soup - Map | Jennifer Sugar and Jill C. Nelson will present and sign “A Life Measured in Inches”, a biography about John Holmes - a young man from small town Ohio who defined the meaning of ‘porn star’ in the seventies amidst drugs, addiction, and a comeback from a scandal involving homicide. A free midnight screening of “Eruption” (a pornographic interpretation of “Double Indemnity”, starring Holmes) will follow, at The Silent Movie Theatre in West Hollywood. For more info, call (310) 659-3110.
- Belly Dance and Brazilian Samba Dance Classes | Monday, August 4, 2008 | $16.00 | 7:00 pm | International Dance Academy Hollywood - Map | These twice-weekly classes will be held throughout the month of August - belly dancing at 7:00, and samba at 8:00 - under the instruction of Patricia Prata. I have seen her perform, rather effortlessly, in fact. Undoubtedly it will be fun and and a great stress reliever, but if solely for the purpose of doing it right, she is the one to learn from. For more info, call (323) 463-8865.
- Warpaint | Monday, August 4, 2008 | 9:00 pm | Free | Spaceland - Map | Taking over Mondays in August at Spaceland is Warpaint. Take a sample of their music here, a cover-inspired ditty that’s just plain angelic and pseudo-folksy with traces of Karen Oh and Meg White, and - rather appropriately - with a little less edge. For more info, call (323) 661-4380.

August 20th, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden · No Comments
This week in the literary world serves up a smorgasboard of readings and book sales. Your wandering mind and/or the writing instrument of your choice will be given plenty of opportunities to peer into characters’ minds as well as those who penned them. With your soft n’ sumptuous brain being an active, absorbent organ, the goal is to minimize the curse of writer’s block, to keep any and all creative juices flowing, and to make more available that commodity termed optimism via expansion of your imagination.

Literary Round-Up: Of Lives Lost, Verbal Calisthenics, Parallel Allusions…
August 13th, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden · 1 Comment
This week in the literary world revolves around the power of expression while time is still available; and of personal experiences, of others and of self. Both function seamlessly with the phenomenon of energy exchange, and are of great impact in the auditory realm and on the printed page. Of course, we’ve found yet another book sale for your inner pack rat. Keep hoarding, my pretties.

Literary Round-Up: Porn Stars, Used Books, Novelists, Spoken Words
August 7th, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden · No Comments
This week in the literary world provides a few opportunities for you to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes - the highlights being a biography briefing the life of a porn star and a moving-picture viewing of his work (as vicarious as one can get without getting a battery of tests); a reading involving two writers who have reached and surpassed literary goals that one could only dream of; and an evening of spoken word, welcoming your listening ear, if not your vocal expression. Of course, we found a used book sale, because as long as there are walls in your abode, there is always room for at least one more bookcase.

Coffee: Discounted Goodness
August 6th, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden · 3 Comments
Mmm, coffee. Can’t function in normal society without it. Steaming hot and aromatic, it’s all good. Does your morning fix last throughout the afternoon? Do you long for the day that your upper of choice becomes intravenous (still talking coffee, here)?
In other words: do you wish you knew how to to quit it?
Starbucks wishes you wouldn’t, so much in fact that they’re offering a sweet nationwide deal for you java-jonesers. Having priced their almost-$4.00 grande iced beverages for a measly $2.00 every day after 2:00 pm means that you can start putting funds towards the more important things - like food, gas, and rent. Or more coffee. All you need is a same-day receipt verifying your morning purchase.
How thoughtful is that?

LA Food: Better Than Your Average Pizza
August 4th, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden · 1 Comment
I must admit to wanting a piece of the occasional chain-style establishment - Mimi’s Cafe for its bread basket and french onion soup; the Hard Rock Cafe for its memorabilia; BJ’s Brewery for its Berry Burst Cider - but after an estimated million and one trips to New York (Brooklyn - Williamsburg, Greenpoint - and East Village) I’ve grown fond of the local establishment that exudes a neutral vibe with consistent quality. I’ve been really fortunate to find restaurants in the Valley serving up Indian, Chinese, and Mexican cuisine that seem to operate under the same ideals, but pizza is a whole ‘nother animal. You’ve got your Papa John’s, Domino’s, Pizza Hut, Little Caesar, all of which don’t claim to be anything other than what they are. Refreshingly so. Then you’ve got supposed New York pizzerias who make you wish they would just not shame New York by abusing the description. I mean, even Taco Bell allows enough fine print to acknowledge that their food is “Mexican-inspired”.
