Barack Obama is the Democratic Nominee

    June 3rd, 2008 Written by: Lola · 2 Comments

barackobama08-06-05Speaking to a huge crowd of screaming supporters in St. Paul, Minnesota - the same city that Senator John McCain will be nominated as the GOP’s official nominee in August - Senator Barack Obama has claimed his victory has the presumptive nominee for the Democratic party.

Whatever side of the aisle you stand on, whoever you have been supporting, tonight is when we “mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another” as Senator Obama said himself so eloquently this evening.

It’s been a long race, nearly 16 months of hard fought campaigning and 54 primary contests, but it has indeed come to an end. So tonight, to the thousands of staff members, volunteers, supporters and families on both sides - give yourselves a huge round of applause, a pat on the back, and a hearty toast to your valiant efforts and work. Tonight you revel in this moment and the glory. Tomorrow you hit the pavement for the fight of all fights.

    The race is on!

    Boothing It: Photobooths of LA

February 10th, 2008 Written by: Lola · No Comments

Lola Photobooth908-02-10It seems like everyone is jumping in a booth of some kind these days. As they should be! With the triumphant passing of Super-Duper-Fat-Tuesday, I thought I’d keep us in the spirit of “boothing” it.

A few days ago a friend of mine sent me a link to a fabulous website, Photobooth.net, a site that tracks photo booths across the country and around the globe. And not these new digital photobooths - the real ones, complete with chemical-peeling, smelly goodness.

These original classics aren’t all that easy to find anymore. But luckily, Photobooth.net has done the some of the leg-work to track them down.

As I scanned the lists for locations near me, I was reminded of my favorite photobooth experience ever. (No, not making out with a my high school boyfriend. Sheesh.) I’ve been pinning this photostrip to bulletin boards in my various offices and workspaces, but in the craziness of my last move, it never emerged to join the latest batch of ephemera on my walls. So I dug it out. (See it. It’s to your left).

Vote smart-080102OK kids, it’s t-minus one month before Super Duper Tuesday, aka CA’s primary election. The Iowans may have had their fun last night piling into high school gyms and farmhouses in the freezing cold. But on February 5th, it’s up to us to show the rest of the country just how we roll.

Got questions about what you need to participate in all of the fun that is the presidential primary process (gotta love that alliteration)? Here are a few simple answers:

    - When is the election? Tuesday, February 5th
    - Don’t I have to be registered? Yup, you sure do. Voter registration deadline is Tuesday, January 22nd.
    - But how do I register? Just fill in this application (link to: www.sos.ca.gov)  by Tuesday, January 22nd. You can also pick up a voter registration form at most post offices.
    - Who can I vote for? Well, that depends on what party your are affiliated with - Democrat, Republican, Independent, Green…you name it. But here’s a little breakdown of the two main parties for y’all.

    Benazir Bhutto Assassinated in Pakistan

    December 27th, 2007 Written by: Lola · 2 Comments

    Benzar-07-12-27Benazir Bhutto
    1953-2007

It’s not local news by any means, but the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, reaches far into the neighborhoods around the world. For many, she represented hope for a true democracy in Pakistan and with her death, that future is dangerously fragile.

Bhutto’s life was filled with blood and controversy - her father was executed and her brothers also assassinated - but she remained “a woman of grand ambitions with a taste for complex political maneuvering.” The first female Prime Minister of any Islamic nation, she spent 8 years in self-imposed exile, returning to Pakistan in October (Incidentally, she survived an assassination attempt on the same day she returned to Pakistan.) She was killed today by gunfire and a suicide bomber as she was leaving a political rally for the upcoming election on January 8th.
