About: Mali

I, just like many other writers out there, love to write. I think the reason I love it, is because it's all about people. Why one does certain things, feels a particular way, or responds in the ways that they do... And the beauty of writing is that while I write a story analyzing someone else, you can read it and analyze my perception of them, and then I can read your comment and judge how you responded to my perception, and we can simultaneously judge one another's responses! Then one day I'll write a book about how you were wrong and I was right... isn't it great?

Movie Releases: The Duchess, Ghost Town, Appaloosa

    September 19th, 2008 Written by: Mali · 1 Comment

This weeks got some interesting choices to consider. The Duchess although a bit depressing, has been getting great reviews and is being call Knightley’s best work yet. Plus, Fiennes’ always makes an interesting villain. Appaloosa, an Ed Harris’ cowboy film, is worth your time, if you like watching Viggo on a horse, shooting up shit (which I do, I absolutely do). Ghost Town is surprisingly a fun, entertaining comedy. Possibly not one of the best of the year, but if you’re looking for something enjoyable and not too heavy, this is definitely a great pick (check out the full ScreenCrave review here). As for Hounddog, Igor, My Best Friend’s Girl, or Lakeview Terrace, you’re on your own there.

Here is this week’s movie releases with cast and crew information, review, tickets, and trailers… enjoy!

September 16th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

The Chemical Brothers gave their fans, filmmakers, and artists, a chance to participate in their new music video “Midnight Madness” via Google Earth. Fans, artists, filmmakers, and anyone else who wanted to participate were asked to create a 2-20 second video using the “Midnight Madness” theme. The video could be a picture, a movie, a conceptual piece, anything that they could film and send in within the time limit that had to do with “celebrating the insanity that goes on at the stroke of midnight… [and] the odd things that people get up to at the midnight hour.”

The results are in and the video has been made. Here is what they came up with…

    Ticket Give-Away: Tokyo Police Club

    September 16th, 2008 Written by: Mali · 9 Comments

The boys of Tokyo Police Club, Dave, Graham, Greg, and Josh, are four good friends living the dream. They grew up dreaming of being rock stars and now with a little nudge they’re soring high. They grew up playing air guitar, lip syncing to songs in front of the mirror, and practicing interviews before bed. Then one day they actually decided trying to play music… and to everyone’s relief, they were awesome.

Their album, A Lesson in Crime, stayed on the Canadian College Charts longer than any other album released in 2006, their video for “Cheer it On” won a MuchMusic Video Award in 2007 (resulting in a very awkward acceptance speech) and they’ve been rocking shows all over. If you ever listen to Indie 103.1, you should know these guys well. I think someone over there has a crush on them. These guys are having a blast and so much fun to watch. They’re a hop, skip, and a jump away from being huge.

See them know so you can say “I knew them when.”

Luckily for you, we’re going to get you for free! We have two pairs of tickets to give-away  to two lucky people for the show at The Music Box and the Fonda (Map) on the 18th.  All you have to do to be entered in a random drawing to win is…

LA Arts: Flip Flops and Platforms

September 16th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

This weekend and next, the Invertigo Dance Theatre will be presenting Flip Flops and Platforms, with original work by Artistic Director Laura Karlin and guest choreographer Jones Welsh, to an LA audience. Invertigo Dance Theatre does a great job at not only interesting choreography for the well trained eye, but also puts an enjoyable and innovatice show for the ballet novice. It’s refreshing to see a company perform for the mere excuse that they love to dance. The movements, music, and choreography is original and a must see for all you Angelinos.

In today’s political climate, soundbites and certainty are valued above willingness to debate or cross into the uncertain grey spaces.  The dancers use dynamic movement to explore how we stand firm on platforms or waver in our beliefs.  Invertigo sets out not to condemn or applaud our political stances, but to reveal the subtleties of how we communicate them.  The piece explores how we frame an issue and each other, how we choose to view someone and what things look like from different perspectives.  All this happens utilizing interactive set pieces, dialogue and of course an array of flip flops and platform shoes.
