L.A. Sports This Week - More NBA Playoffs, Finally Dodger Success

May 5th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

LA Sports - Regular PhotoThe Lakers look like they might be the best team in the NBA right now. They continue their playoff run this week. Both the Dodgers and Angels have been hot lately, and look to build off their recent success.

    NBA

    Lakers

    • vs Utah, Wednesday, 7:30, TNT
    • at Utah, Friday, 6:00, ESPN
    • at Utah, Sunday, 12:30, ABC

The Lakers rolled over the Jazz 109-98 on Sunday in a game that dragged horribly near the end, with 24 fouls called in the 4th quarter. The Jazz probably won’t go down that easily in the rest of the series, but the Lakers seem to be peaking right now and may be able to make it through the series without too many issues. Something to look out for is the Jazz’ success at home – they lost only four games at EnergySolutions Arena over the entire regular season, although Houston did win there once in the first round.

L.A. Real Estate - Grace Under Fire photoThis week was a light one on the real estate news front, but something is always going on. It’s a great week for real estate events. New information was gleaned that may affect the presidential campaign. These stories are more in this week’s real estate roundup.

    Celebrity Real Estate

DreamWorks co-founder David Geffen has found himself a new house in Malibu. Previously owned by Hard Rock Cafe co-founder Peter Morton, Geffen’s new property is just a few houses down from the enormous compound where he primarily lives. L.A. Real Estate This Week - A Landmark Case, International and Domestic Problems

April 18th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

L.A. Real Estate - Warren Christopher photoA major courtroom decision that may affect nearly every real estate transaction was made this week. The housing crisis has spread abroad. Another major lender has big problems. These stories and more in this week’s real estate roundup.

    Celebrity Real Estate

Warren Christopher, Secretary of State under Bill Clinton, has listed his house in Beverly Hills for $3.259 million and has bought himself a condo in Century City. Christopher bought the Beverly Hills house in the 1970s, before he began his term as Assistant Secretary of State under Jimmy Carter, during which he negotiated the release of the hostages in the Iran hostage crisis. That house is a 1930s-style 3-bedroom house sitting on an 18,000 square foot lot. The new condo has only 2 bedrooms, so Christopher and his wife Marie may have felt the need to downsize in their old age.

Kenny Chesney has already listed his property in Malibu that he bought just recently. The property, which Chesney purchased for $7.4 million, has been newly listed for $7.95 million.

This Week in Sports: NBA Playoffs Begin

April 14th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

sports08-04-13The Lakers begin the playoffs this week after a superb weekend showing. Also in the playoffs are the Ducks, who had a miserable week, falling into an 0-2 hole. The Dodgers and Angels both have a full slate of games against opponents they should beat.

    NBA

    Lakers

    • vs. Sacramento, Tuesday, 7:30, FSW
    • vs. Undetermined Playoff Opponent later in week

The Lakers wrapped up an extremely impressive week with victories over both New Orleans and San Antonio over the weekend. They currently hold the number one seed in the West and the tiebreaker over the Hornets, their nearest competition. The Tuesday game against Sacramento should be a tune-up for the postseason, which begins on Saturday. The Nuggets are the most likely opponent for the Lakers, though they could still face Dallas or Golden State. Both Denver and Golden State pose easy matchups for the Lakers, but Dallas would be a little tougher. Either way, the Lakers should make it through to the second round with no real problems.

This Week in Sports: Big Laker Games, NHL Playoffs Begin

April 8th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

watchingsports08-04-08The Lakers have a couple of big games this weekend that could decide playoff seeding, while the Ducks have already reached the playoffs and begin their title defense on Thursday. Both the Dodgers and the Angels face their top rivals for division titles this week.

    Lakers

    • @ Portland, Tuesday, 7:00, KCAL
    • @ Clippers, Thursday, 7:30, TNT
    • vs. New Orleans, Friday, 7:30, FSW
    • vs. San Antonio, Sunday, 12:30, ABC

The Lakers have only five games left in their season before the real work begins. These last few games are still important, however, because they will determine seeding in the extremely competitive Western Conference. Portland and the Clippers should be easy work for the powerhouse Lakers, but the Hornets and Spurs are the other top teams in the Conference. Beating either one would go far in helping the Lakers get the #1 seed, but neither game will be easy. Expect the Lakers to win one of the two games.

L.A. Real Estate: Major Scandals, Minor Celebrities

April 2nd, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

L.A. Real Estate - Dr. Phil photoThe treasury secretary has voiced his opinion on the subprime mess. A major lender has become embroiled in scandal. Some minor celebrities have made big purchases. These stories and more in this week’s real estate round-up.

Celebrity psychologist Dr. Phil has bought yet another property in the L.A. area. The newest property is located at 8261 Woodshill Trl. in the Hollywood Hills. Dr. Phil normally lives in one of his houses in Beverly Hills, which he purchased in 2002 for $7.5 million, nearly three times what he paid for this new property. He also bought another Beverly Hills house in early 2007. The newest property has just two bedrooms and only a 0.1 acre estate, much smaller than his primary residence.

Tom Arnold has listed his house in Tarzana for $2.2 million. The house was once owned by American Idol judge Randy Jackson. It’s probably a coincidence that one of Arnold’s former houses was owned at one point by Paula Abdul, but maybe he just has an American Idol obsession.
