    Star Wars: The Clone Wars

August 16th, 2008 Written by: Matt · No Comments

There are three reasons why you should go see Star Wars:The Clone Wars.

    1. If you are a (Die Hard) Star Wars fan.
    2. If you have children and you are slowly trying to introduce them into the Star Wars universe.
    3. You are looking to kill some time. If none of these apply to you by all means save your money, or go see Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express or The Dark Knight. All of these are by far a better use of your hours.

(Warning spoilers ahead) The plot of this newest Star Wars saga goes something like this. Anakin Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi have their hands full fighting amongst the Clone Army. In the middle of all this battling, a young Padawan by the name of Ahsoka is sent (via master Yoda) to be trained by Anakin. Throw in a subplot about Jabba the Hut’s son being kidnapped and a double cross by the evil Count Dooku and presto,  this film unsteadily has its legs. Two hours later, the message is simple and easy to get. Young Padawan’s should trust their elders, and secondly, though you may be a Jedi you still could use some help now and then.

    Resteraunt Review: Miceli’s

August 10th, 2008 Written by: Matt · No Comments

It’s long been my personal opinion that Italian food should only be enjoyed every once in a while, mostly because of it’s rich taste and my gluttonous eating habits. However, watch out slim waistline! I may have just changed my mind and be inclined to start wearing fat pants soon, due to the fine folks at Miceli’s.

Miceli’s has been family owned and operated in the heart of Hollywood since 1949. They have three floors of everything you’d expect at a fine Italian restaurant, and more. Not to mention, a hidden downstairs dining hall perfect for a large sized family get together or a mafia shoot out, or both. Upon entering the front door your greeted with inviting sights, smells, and sound all designed to enhance your dining experience. Among the more prominent things to behold are the Red and White checkered table cloths, Plethora of hanging Wine Bottles, Original Dark wood framing from the Pig’n Whistle, and if you happen to be there at night, award winning Piano man Brian O’Rourke. This guy can play and definitely deserves a tip in his jar. High marks go to the staff as well who are attentive ,friendly, and also super fast. In fact, my meal was prepared so quickly that I had to cut short my dinner conversation with my best friend Mary Elizabeth.

Art Review and Photo Essay: Automolove

August 8th, 2008 Written by: Matt · No Comments

There is no part of my ego that is large enough that would allow me to call myself an art critic on any level. However, with the recently opened AutomoLove exhibit at the Antebellum gallery in Hollywood, I may have to start sipping wine and eating high priced cheese.

Thanks to artist and owner of the Antebellum gallery Rick Castro, fetish enthusiast and automotive junkies alike can come together and enjoy some spectacular shall we say, “different” pieces of art. Ranging from Playfully cartoonish to blatantly sexually suggestive, this collection of over twenty artist featuring paintings, photography and drawings, is guaranteed to hold something for everyone to appreciate. Akon, David Banner, and Rick Ross lead a show of custom cars, music, and other new products at the L.A. Convention Center.  The show will showcase some of the world’s top custom cars for the sixth year running.

Included in the show is the MLB Road Show tractor trailer, meant to promote baseball to fans around the country with a traveling display.  In addition to the expected merchandise, in this case the “Authentic” line, the same stuff worn by the real players, the truck also gives fans the chance to try their hand at playing the game a bit themselves with batting and pitching cages.

Concert Review: Push at the Roxy

July 29th, 2008 Written by: Matt · No Comments

Saturday night was the L.A. release party for JanSport’s new lines of backpacks and bags. In an effort to make the company hip again and make backpacks that don’t have to have a litany of pins and patches to look interesting, JanSport is releasing a line of “heritage bags” and a series of backpacks designed by two renowned street artists, Julie West and JoeX2. The artists have turned backpacks into canvasses for their art. The backpacks, some of which I really like the design of, are now available from JanSport.

Since the show was a promotion for a line of backpacks and bags, tickets were free and the show was open to all ages. I hadn’t been to an all-ages show in quite some time, and it’s a vibe I don’t especially miss. Despite the free admission and all-ages status of the show, it was sparsely attended, which was certainly disappointing for JanSport, but partly their own fault.

    New Website: Loudvine

    July 19th, 2008 Written by: Matt · 1 Comment

If you’re looking for a site for info on L.A. bands and their gigs, you can’t do any better than Loudvine.com. Started by a group of people, who just like you, were looking for a one-stop source for all the concert information they wanted for the city.

Loudvine operates similarly to any other social networking site. You can create a profile with information about yourself and add friends and bands that you are a fan of. There are separate sections to search for fellow fans and to search for artists. On each profile, you can see a person’s or a band’s favorite genres and bands so that you can compare tastes and find something you might be interested in. Bands also have some of their songs and gig information.

    Film Review: The Dark Knight

    July 18th, 2008 Written by: Matt · 5 Comments

My armpits are sweating, my heart is pounding, I check my pulse and it’s racing. The butterflies in my stomach are generating hurricane force winds, and it feels as if I’ve been smacked upside the head with a lead pipe. What is the cause of these feelings? I just saw The Dark Knight, twenty four hours ago.

From the Viral marketing campaign, the posters and billboards, TV spots and theatrical trailers splattered all over Youtube, its been extremely difficult to not see any new material for this movie. Fortunately though I managed to go in with a clear head having only seen one full length trailer from the media barrage that The Dark Knight has become. It brings me great pleasure to say that this film completely exceeds any expectation that the hype has generated. There isn’t enough praise that I could possibly give this film that would do it justice; that and the fact that there aren’t any words in the English language that truly convey my feelings about what I’ve just seen. Some poor attempts are as follows, Epic, Unforgettable, White knuckle thrill ride, Monumental achievement.

Upcoming: VH1 Rock Honors the Who at UCLA Tonight

July 12th, 2008 Written by: Matt · No Comments

thewho08-07-13The third installment of VH1’s lifetime achievement show, Rock Honors, tapes Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion. Unlike in years past, this year’s show will honor just one band, or at least what’s left of it, The Who. The previous two editions of the show taped in Las Vegas, but this year’s edition tapes here in L.A.

The Who were formed in mid-1960s England and were most famous at the time for their destructive antics on stage. However, they soon became one of the key bands in the British invasion with their debut album, My Generation. They followed this up with a number of other famous albums, including their “rock opera,” Tommy. The band stayed famous and popular through most of the ’70s, but was hard hit by the death of iconic drummer Keith Moon in 1978. The rest of the band remained together until 1983 until they decided to call things off. Just before what was to be a reunion tour in 2002, bassist John Entwistle was found dead from a heart attack.
