    Celebrate National Candy Month!

    June 29th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · 2 Comments

Bonbons Great news, everyone. June is National Candy Month! Now, here’s a reason to celebrate, overdo the sugar, and pretend to be a kid! While participating in this holiday does not really require instruction (Drive to 7-Eleven, pick up a Reese’s and a bag of Sour Patch Kids, eat), you could do something a little cuter. Why? Just cause? Sure. Here are a couple places to truly experience a kid-in-a-candy-shop feeling, but minus the Big Chew bubble gum and Lick-a-Maid packets.

Boule was compared to La Duree candy shop in Paris, which immediately caught my eye and told me it’d be a place to see. (Located throughout Paris, La Duree is, like, candy taken to the most gourmet level. As in, wealthy Parisians meeting over a glass of wine and a plate of.. one chocolate. For probably more than your average Parisian entree. Ridiculous, but if you like candy, marvelous!)

Shopping: Back with an Attack of Super Sales! Watch out.

June 28th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

    Sample Sale sign.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen some magic shopping dust your way. I do apologize, so for this week, I’ve compiled quite a list this week to make up!

First, and most importantly, as this sale is ALREADY occurring:

    1. “The (emphasis added) Sample Sale” is located on Melrose, this sale, complete with clothes, shoes and accessories, will feature tons of brands, it seems. “Blumarine, Lela Rose, Martin Grant, Narcisco Rodriguez, Milly, Tory Butch, Easton Pearson, Ferretti, Chloe, and more” will be discounted 50-80%. (topbutton)

    • When: NOW (Saturday June 28) and Sunday, June 29. Sat. 11am – 7pm. and Sun. 12pm – 5pm.
    • Where: 7967 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, 90046. (213) 840-1664

    2. Secondly, an equally high end sale for the sale-lovers, but not necessarily the bargain searchers:2. The Blast Boutqiue Summer Sale will happen THIS Saturday (June 28). To qualify my meaning of “high end”, here’s who will be featured: Dolce & Gabbana, Cavalli, Chloe, Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and Fendi. To name a few.

Shopping: Hurry for today’s sales or save the date for next week’s!

June 1st, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

Prada bag.If you want something more unique than the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale (which is going on right now, by the way), here are some other options for you deal-seekers and clothes lovers:

Italmost is holding a sale, with Prada, Chloe, and Gucci Handbags at 35% off. Another 70% and I’ll be able to afford one! For those who can, visit the Beverly Hills store (apparently there for 10 years) and snatch up a new bag. Or, if you’re like me and not quite able to purchase one of these, turn right to their sale rack, where purses are 85% off! That sounds just FINE to me. Nothing wrong with used if you can keep your home and car after buying it.

Some pluses: They offer exchanges, and they also buy and trade bags - in “great condition.” Another plus, there’s free public parking next door, but only for two hours - so don’t spend the day trying to decide what purse you want, or you’ll be making up for that discount with a ticket!

    • When: This weekend! Hurry! 9:30am - 5pm.
    • Where: 331 N. Beverly Dr., Suite #1, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. Call (310) 247-0887 for details.

Upcoming Events: Country-Style Festivities for Workaholic City-Dwellers

May 13th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

Strawberry Festival Nothing controversial or crazy in this post, but instead some good, old-fashioned, home-grown fun. Parties, shopping, protests? Nope. But banjos, strawberries, and wheel-barrows? Yes’m. So whether you’re in desperate need of a break from high-intensity L.A. or just want to see if I’m making up these uncharacteristically country-style happenings, go ahead and head on over, folks.

    First and most folky:

    1. 48th Annual Topanga Banjo Fiddle Festival and Folk Contest - Tell me this is not the most awesome thing you’ve ever heard: the festival is held where mountain and western films were once filmed. So could I be standing in the same place John Wayne was? I wonder.. Anyway, here are all the folsky details:

    When: May 18, from 9am to 6pm.

Neighborhood: Homelessness, and a few ways to address those on the streets.

May 12th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

Homeless man with cart in Los Angeles. My co-worker at Peet’s today was frustrated with our regular homeless customer (who, by the way, pays for his coffee every time). The guy “smelled so bad” that he was to be banned from sitting in front of our store. I thought, well, he’s outside, we’re inside- why does it matter? I then pictured him, slouching, half-asleep, belly hanging out, taking up the entire table, all day. What image would that give to our coffee shop? Maybe she’s right, I thought. He shouldn’t hang out in front of here. But, then my familiar, homeless-pitying self returned, and I remembered that this guy must be having the hardest time just getting through each day. How could I argue that he didn’t deserve a break to relax at our tables? (Not that his break would be the least bit relaxing. The majority of the morning he probably worries that we’ll shoo him away or wonders where he’s sleeping that night.)

Restaurants: Very Vegetarian and Equally Delicious Native Foods

May 11th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

    Native Foods restaurant.

With it recently being Earth Day, I’ve been thinking about how I can further help the environment. While I feel proud declining a bag at Whole Foods, I won’t be able to claim this feat when I actually have real groceries to get. Like, in the real, non-college world. And while recycling is great, I mean, that’s like old news: recycling should be a part of our daily activities by now, right? So my new thing I attempting to use less resources, in general. One way to attempt to do so is by paying attention to what you’re physically consuming -that is, your food! Easy enough (although a little more pricey) is buying local. Get in the habit of checking the labels on your fruit: if you buy enough melons imported from Chile, you’ve indirectly used quite a bit of fuel! Another waster you might not consider (I, for one, had no idea about this until a year ago) is beef. The amount of water needed to grow the grain to feed the cows, clean their, you know, waste, and so on, is obscene. By eating one pound of beef, you use as much water as you would showering every day for a year!

May 10th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

Mom and daughter shopping.Andddddd it’s sale time! Well, next week. The sale radar has been low for me on this search. But the quality of these sales? Four star, my friends!

Some quite glorious-sounding events are coming our way. And, guess what? Next weekend is Mother’s Day. So for those of you who reconcile fights with your mother by engaging in joint retail therapy (like yours truly), then these might be for you! For those who think buying stuff is too superficial for a Mother’s Day celebration, well, that’s okay, there will always be next weekend. But really, shopping can do wonders for any rocky relationships.

    Happy shopping, and, most importantly,

    Happy Early Mother’s Day!

    1. Ellie Schwimmer Handbags and Paula Carlotto Jewelry sale

    • Where: 7122 Beverly Blvd., Second Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Enter at Detroit St.
    • When: Next Saturday, May 10 (my birthday-perfect timing everyone.)

And there is one actually occurring (like, in reality), THIS weekend. Located not on a cloud in dream land, but in North Hollywood. I know, I know, too good to be true. Like I said, if overly excited bursts of shock and surprise might annoy you, feel free to skim quickly and move on. Because the excitement level of yours truly is off the charts.

Okay, rant over, excitement contained momentarily, time to actually provide something informative about shopping this weekend.

    April 19th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · 1 Comment

Sample SaleHere are some cool shopping events to… I was going to say, keep you cool this weekend, but seeing as temperatures are expected to drop to 60 degrees, maybe they will instead be to keep you warm! (Okay, I know 60 is not cold. But it’s cold enough to elicit a shopping excursion!)

    1. Joie Sample Sale:
Clothing from this lovely brand up to 85% off. Items offered will not just be out-of-season, but new stuff too. Even more lovely!

A couple notes in fine print : No dressing rooms will be available, and all sales are final. So be sure what you’re getting is, like, actually your style, and not just appealing because of its gigantic mark-down. Shouldn’t be a problem - Joie clothing is really cute, I must say.

    • The sale is Saturday (as in, today), from 8am - 5:30pm. So hurry hurry!
    • Where? 2323 52nd Street (btwn. Santa Fe and Alameda St.), Vernon, CA 90058

Earth Day: 10 Things You Can Do to Help.

    April 18th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · 2 Comments

    Tree.

Ten ways to be Green that you might have actually NOT heard before.

    1. At the grocery store, be crazy, rebellious, and unimaginably strong, and don’t use a bag. If you’re buying gallons of milk (although more sustainable would be not buying gallons in the first place), I admit a bag is a good idea, unless you want to take thirteen trips to your car and have your arms go numb. Trust me, “running out” (AKA messing up the order) of milk at Peet’s is not fun, because I get to walk to Ralph’s and play the how-many-gallons-can-I-stuff-in-my-hands-and-haul-back-to-work game. Last time I was doing this, practically falling over and sweating, my face hidden behind Alta Dena Low-fat Milk containers, oh, Reese Witherspoon happened to pop in when I returned. Great. My luck. Anyways, back from my digression: if you are buying something not huge, carry it home! Without a bag!

    2. Turn off your lap-top,not only to save electricity, but to give that ‘ole, hard-working friend a rest! You’d be surprised- your computer might run like a speed demon after.

Shopping: Escape from the heat in an oasis of sales this week.

April 13th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

    Summer DressSummer dress.
Summer shopping.Hopefully some of these sales will have some HOT WEATHER clothing, and if not, a pretty huge price cut for anything other than. Because I cannot imagine buying a jacket, sweatshirt, pants, socks, or frankly anything other than a personal fan and spray bottle right now. Or in the next six months. It is sweltering outside, and I have a feeling it will be for more than just a day. So let’s get out of the heat and shop from now until the winter sales. Summer dress.

Here are some places of refuge, my poor souls. So next weekend, when you’re dripping in sweat as you sit in your car on Highway 10, you can remember those sales you wrote down from Nicola’s post, find the nearest sale to you, pull off the freeway and rescue yourself!
