Restaurant Review: The Sky Room

March 11th, 2008 Written by: Bobbie · No Comments

theskyroom-8-03-10Looking for an experience that combines romance, stunning views and a bit of history thrown in? Then the Sky Room at the historic Breakers building in Long Beach is the place for you.

This article is not exactly a restaurant review, as I didn’t dine at the Sky Room. However I did have drinks and was able to experience the atmosphere of this unique venue.

Doing research for a future article, I discovered that the Sky Room has a great bar on the top floor. Therefore, my friend Lisa, her sister Lara and I went last Friday evening to check it out. The Sky Room has several rooms other than the restaurant and bar including a chapel in the lobby. [ Read The Full Story -> ]

Where to Drink: St. Patrick’s Day

March 11th, 2008 Written by: Christianne · No Comments

Green Beer 20090310If you can’t wait till next Monday to get your green beer on, the pre-party starts at 11am Saturday in Hermosa Beach with the 14th Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. Prime viewing is at the intersection of Valley and Pier Avenues, and anticipated performers include bagpipers, marching bands, local dignitaries and other community organizations. If you’re looking for a good time (and let’s be honest - who isn’t?) seek out other young, lithe singles on the pier. The parade is sponsored by Hennesey’s Tavern (8 Pier Ave, 310.372.5759) and Patrick Molloy’s (50A Pier Ave, 310.798.9762), so those watering holes are sure to be open early.

If you’re saving your St. Patrick’s Day strength for the real deal - Monday, March 17 - stop by Brennan’s Pub (4089 Lincoln Blvd, 310.821.6622) in Marina del Rey. Best known for its turtle racing, Brennan’s opens early on St. Patrick’s Day and has two stages with live music. Check out the line-up here. The $10 cover charge starts at 2pm, so if you can skip out of work early that day, you may save yourself a few bucks.

Save a little green so that you have more to spend on the green. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Valley Girl Goes Green: Celebrate St. Patricks Day at Irelands 32

March 8th, 2008 Written by: Jamie · No Comments

Ireland’s 32 in Van NuysOk I know, I have another week to talk about St. Patrick’s Day, but this time around it’s about more than finding a good pub wherein to get schnockered. It’s about pride, and honor, and a the birth of a new Holiday:

“Oh My Goodness My” Guinness, the lovely blackened-red beer beloved by thousands of bitter beer lovers (this one joyously included) have decided to petition congress to make St. Patrick’s Day an official Holiday. I’m guessing that means we can get off school and work to get wasted on a Monday! Woo Hoo! Be sure to sign the petition here, they need over 800,000 MORE signatures by March 16th at midnight. But there’s more to St Patrick’s Day than Guinness, if that’s not your cup of…well, Guinness. As we know it’s also about getting together with friends and making general merriment. And being that I’m from the Valley, I know ALL about merriment!! Right?? Right. Here are my humble suggestions for the impending holiday.

L.A. Top Five: House Drinks

March 5th, 2008 Written by: Maggie Flynn · No Comments

LADrinksMF08-03-05Sure you could stay home and drink a whole bottle of wine for what you’d pay for one glass in any L.A. bar, but what fun would that be? The Los Angeles landscape is dotted with bars ancient and new, classy and dive-y, kitschy and chic. No matter your tastes or purpose – people-watching, hooking up, drunken conversations with strangers, you can find one to suit your needs, often within a mile radius of your front door.

But let’s say that you’re in the mood for a specialty concoction that you can’t get at any other bar. A really good house drink somehow makes that steep tab at the end of the night all the more worth it. So here are the places where you can sample L.A.’s top five drinks. (Note: This list will reflect the fact that I don’t often leave the confines of Los Feliz/Silverlake/Atwater Village. Feel free to weigh in with your own favorites.)

Where to Drink: St Paddy’s Day Santa Monica

March 4th, 2008 Written by: Christianne · No Comments

Guinness 20080303It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do – everyone is Irish on St. Paddy’s Day. Every March 17th, pubs across town fill up with lads and lassies searching for a cold pint and a good time. Not sure where to go? Try out one of these Irish-themed watering holes:

Sonny McLean’s (2615 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica 310.449.1811) If you love Beantown and the Red Sox, this is your bar. No other bar in town pledges greater love for New England sports, as is evidenced by the shamrock mural on the Westside of the building. Be advised that this quaint little bar lacks a parking lot and serves beer and wine only. A small price to pay for a little bit of Boston.

If you’re searching for a harder drink, cross the street to O’Briens (2226 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica 310.829.5303). With lots of seating and a full bar, you’ll find it by the light of the neon shamrock on the outside of the building.

Photo Essay: Society at its Finest

February 19th, 2008 Written by: Guest Writer · No Comments

If you’re like me, you’re probably frustrated with the conventional nightclub choices we have in Los Angeles. Its the same old thing every week, let it be go-go dancers, annoying tourists, or the lack of glamor in dress. Billy Burgess and Corey Deist are brilliant masterminds behind a new monthly sophisticated and chic event called Society. An event that is “for those who conform to nothing and desire something different.” Deist describes the party’s vibe as “upscale fashionistas mingling with highbrow-meets-Lower East Side.” Society is held at the spectacular bar and lounge Republic and everyone from all walks of life is invited to attend. You definitely have to check this out!No date has been announced for the next event however, for more information you can visit Society on the web at www.myspace.com.

The following are a few images I shot from Society on February 17:Corey Deist and Billy Burgess

Bar Review: Stop on a Dime

February 15th, 2008 Written by: Karl · No Comments

Bar 20080215You know those nights where you want to go out, but don’t feel like dealing with a cover charge and lines and tons of people making it impossible to get from one side of the bar to another? These nights usually follow nights of partying during the week, so you’ve pretty much had your weekly dose of Sunset nightlife. But even so, you just NEED to get out to a place that’s lively, just not too lively; a place that’s almost a dive bar, but not as seedy; more importantly, a place where looking relaxed is looking good.

Well, hop on over to The Dime.

Red Hand/White Man – I Hate The Standard (downtown)

February 8th, 2008 Written by: Big Al, the gal · No Comments

The StandardWhile I was crossing the street, I thought, I’ve never been to the Hollywood location of The Standard, but I live one block from their crummy downtown building. If you don’t know, The Standard downtown is an ultra-wannabe hotel with a great (in looks only) bar on the roof. Kudos to the designer. Middle-finger to the manager.

The funny thing is that this place should be the coolest destination spot in town, but stale music, high prices, and atrocious service make it a pain in the butt to be a loyal patron. I have actually never had a good experience there. Below are three of their worst offenses.

Restaurant / Bar Review: The Library Alehouse Rules

February 8th, 2008 Written by: Kendra · No Comments

Library Alehouse 07-12-19Let’s say your cruising down Main Street in Santa Monica. And, let’s say you’re hungry or thirsty. If you can make it past that crazy homeless guy with the beard in front of Coffee Bean, duck into The Library Alehouse. This place is the main reason I regret moving away from the beach.

First off, it’s really awesome inside. Very cozy and dark with a nice, polite staff. If the weather’s nice, the back patio is cute. Just make sure they don’t seat you in the way back next to the bathroom. That bathroom door is the busiest door in Santa Monica. Must be all the beer.
