Soccer: It’s a Plane, It’s a Bird…It’s the SuperLiga!

July 14th, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago · No Comments

Soccer SUPERLIGADS-08-13-06The second edition of the SuperLiga is now underway after the inaugural matches were played over the weekend. Eight teams will battle against each other to win the coveted trophy and the pride of North America.

But what exactly is the SuperLiga?

It may not be as big as the World Cup or the recently played Eurocup. But the SuperLiga is a new and exciting tournament that lets Major League Soccer teams have a chance to play competitive soccer against clubs of a different country.

It’s basically a duel between Mexico and the United States. Four teams from each country competing for the cup. This year the New England Revolution, Houston Dynamo, D.C. United and Chivas USA will represent the United States. Chivas de Guadalajara, who is the inspiration for the creation of Chivas USA, Santos, Atlante and defending champions Pachuca are the Mexican representatives.

Whether you’re using the weekend to wind down or celebrating Father’s Day, Los Angeles has a lot to offer you. From films at a drive-in to The Happening premiering on Friday the 13th and the FIFA World Cup Qualifier, there are more than enough activities for you and Dad.

FILM

  • Angel City Drive-In: Meatballs | Saturday, June 14, 2008 | 7 p.m. | $10 | Angel City Drive-In - Map | The week is over, you’re happy and I’m happy. One of the best things you can do on a Saturday night is go see Bill Murray’s film debut in the camp classic, Meatballs at a Drive-In. Food will be provided by the Angel City Derby Girls, there is new Astroturf and DJ Morgan will be playing songs before the movie beings. If you’ve never been to a Drive-In (shame on you), you should know that your FM Transmitter puts the sound into your car and you are welcome to BYOB.
  • Charlie Chaplin Father’s Day Matinee | Sunday, June 15, 2008 | 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. | $12 | Silent Movie Theatre - Map | In honor of Father’s Day, the Silent Movie Theatre presents a classic Chaplin film, “The Kid.” The story begins when “The Tramp” adopts an abandoned baby he discovers in an alley and raises him as his own, and teaches him a few things about schemes and cons along the way.

SPORTS

  • 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifier: USA vs. Barbados | Sunday, June 15, 2008 | 2 p.m. | $25 - 70 | Home Depot Center - Map | If you’re into soccer or football as they call it overseas, it might be fun to go see this game ( and take Dad along with you ). L.A. Sports This Week: The NBA Finals Begin, Galaxy Goes to Colorado and More

June 2nd, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

L.A. Sports This Week - Stock Photo

The Lakers are back in the Finals against their old rivals, but we have to wait until Thursday so that the TV schedule is optimum for the NBA. The Angels and Dodgers are heading in opposite directions, but both face teams that have fallen flat on their faces this season.

NBA

Lakers

  • at Boston, Thursday, 6:00, ABC
  • at Boston, Sunday, 6:00, ABC

The Lakers have made it back to the Finals for another edition of their traditional rivalry with the Celtics after a Western Conference Finals that was way easier than many people thought it would be. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Celtics are a much better team than the Spurs this season. Longtime stars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce are still looking for their first championships, meaning the Celtics will be just as hungry as the Lakers, and more talented. I expect the Lakers to lose a hard-fought series.

This Week in Sports: NBA Playoffs Begin

April 14th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

sports08-04-13The Lakers begin the playoffs this week after a superb weekend showing. Also in the playoffs are the Ducks, who had a miserable week, falling into an 0-2 hole. The Dodgers and Angels both have a full slate of games against opponents they should beat.

NBA

Lakers

  • vs. Sacramento, Tuesday, 7:30, FSW
  • vs. Undetermined Playoff Opponent later in week

The Lakers wrapped up an extremely impressive week with victories over both New Orleans and San Antonio over the weekend. They currently hold the number one seed in the West and the tiebreaker over the Hornets, their nearest competition. The Tuesday game against Sacramento should be a tune-up for the postseason, which begins on Saturday. The Nuggets are the most likely opponent for the Lakers, though they could still face Dallas or Golden State. Both Denver and Golden State pose easy matchups for the Lakers, but Dallas would be a little tougher. Either way, the Lakers should make it through to the second round with no real problems.

This Week in Sports: Big Laker Games, NHL Playoffs Begin

April 8th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

watchingsports08-04-08The Lakers have a couple of big games this weekend that could decide playoff seeding, while the Ducks have already reached the playoffs and begin their title defense on Thursday. Both the Dodgers and the Angels face their top rivals for division titles this week.

Lakers

  • @ Portland, Tuesday, 7:00, KCAL
  • @ Clippers, Thursday, 7:30, TNT
  • vs. New Orleans, Friday, 7:30, FSW
  • vs. San Antonio, Sunday, 12:30, ABC

The Lakers have only five games left in their season before the real work begins. These last few games are still important, however, because they will determine seeding in the extremely competitive Western Conference. Portland and the Clippers should be easy work for the powerhouse Lakers, but the Hornets and Spurs are the other top teams in the Conference. Beating either one would go far in helping the Lakers get the #1 seed, but neither game will be easy. Expect the Lakers to win one of the two games.

Adult Kickball: Guts and Glory

April 5th, 2008 Written by: Devon · No Comments

img_8574.jpgYou remember it…the pride, the pressure…the spinning, bouncing ball flying towards your feet…the connection of hi-top to rubber…the look on that punk Josh’s face as your kick sails over his head, just out of his four foot reach.

You’d probably be lying if you said you’ve never once reminisced about your kickball glory days. Good news - those days don’t have to be over. The World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) is an organization that sets up and governs league kickball play all across the country. Southern California is home to many WAKA divisions, so there’s a pretty good chance you can find one within a reasonable distance from where you live.

Angriest Man in LA: 5 Things To Know About Red Sox Nation

March 30th, 2008 Written by: Spencer · No Comments

boston redsox08-03-29If you’re a Dodgers or an Angels fan, I’m sure you know the experience. You’re attending a HOME game, but your seat is surrounded by drunken males wearing Varitek jerseys or cute females in Ramirez jerseys with pink Boston hats. They’re louder than Los Angeles fans. You hate them. Most of the country hates them. This weekend, they will descend upon Los Angeles for the Dodgers exhibition series. Where do they come from? Five things to know.

1) Deep inside, we know we’re not THAT dis-similar from the Yankees. BUT, our payroll is still smaller than theirs. And yes, I know it’s ridiculous relative to the rest of the league.

2) We will never admit 1).

Interview: Swinging Downtowners

March 25th, 2008 Written by: Big Al, the gal · No Comments

Urban Golfer sfslimIs your concern for your golf swing preventing you from moving to downtown LA? Well, fret not fore your golf score!

As I have never personally caused a club to come in contact with a golf ball (though I have tried), I asked a golf enthusiast about his experience living downtown and trying to maintain a decent swing.

Big Al, the gal: Have you found a driving range that is close to your downtown residence? A golf course?

Griffin: Absolutely! The Aroma driving range on Wilshire in Koreatown opens at 7 a.m. (for an early session before work).

I believe the closest golf course is the Griffith Park golf course just up the 5 and exit Los Feliz Blvd (also a driving range here that opens at 6 a.m.).

Big Al, the gal: What has been your experience with these places?
