Local LA: Underwear Run

What better way to support cancer then to strip down to your knickers! Next Saturday August 2, Jockey will be presenting City of Hope’s Underwear Affair supporting cancers below the waist.

Hundreds of enthusiastic supporters will hit the streets of L.A. in outrageous costumes for, a 10k run/5k walk to support research and treatment of such cancers. Let’s face it, cancer below the waist can be a hard thing to face and even harder to talk about. Lightening it up so that people feel more comfortable talking about it, dealing with it, and hopefully preventing and/or treating it is a wonderful thing. And if you don’t feel comfortable in your tightie whities then feel free to dress up us in whatever crazy concoction you can come up with.

You can even arrive early around 6 p.m. to enjoy “Hollywood Bowl” style picnicking before the show.

Comic Con is Here People!

All you comic book fans, fantasy films buffs, cartoon junkies, video game addicts, and collectible zealots, it’s your time to shine. Screw the Oscars. Forget about Cannes. If you’re a Fanboy this is where the real films, stars, and entertainment is. Starting today July 24th and running until this Sunday July 27th at the San Diego Convention Center, 125,000 fans will come to celebrate the greatest place on earth, Comic-Con.

Hall H has tons of film stars promoting and screening their upcoming films. They will be screening films such as Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, The Mutant Chronicles, and many, many more. If films aren’t your thing, they’ve got video game halls, anime sections, and plenty of collectible booths of all types. There are entire wings set up for autograph signings ranging from Dean Koontz and Tori Amos to Matt Groening and Simon Pegg. Or check out Artist Alley for a list of countless amazing artists who will be in attendance.

Local LA: Old Fort MacArthur Days

The Fort MacArthur Museum was the setting for a trip through time this past weekend. On Sunday, it was warm and the sky was blue while an assortment of 70 different reenactment organizations, dedicated to various periods of military history, enjoyed sharing their knowledge and passion for a bygone era. Armed warriors, from the Roman legion to the Viet Cong, enthusiastically demonstrated their skills on the old battlements of the museum.

Turning in to Angel’s Gate Park, my niece Fiona and I, saw a trio of Native American Indian tepees camped just beyond the Korean Friendship Bell. This startling contrast, on the hills that overlook the Pacific Ocean, boded well for an exciting experience.
