Avoid the Multiplex: Marty, Eraserhead, Solid Gold Cadillac

August 7th, 2008 Written by: Tom von Logue Newth · No Comments

The Aero:

It’s an Ernest Borgnine fest at the Aero. Until his later years, he was usually ornery and malicious, and great at it, but in Marty, one of his best films, he plays a sweet sadsack of a Brooklyn butcher, fat and ugly and resigned to never finding love. It was a TV play by Paddy Chayevsky and starred Rod Steiger a couple of years before; I always felt a bit sorry or Steiger he didn’t get to do the big screen version, but it’s hard to imagine him carrying off with such conviction the unassuming humility of a regular schmo that blossoms into tentative hope the way Borgnine does. Along with the script, it’s Borgnine’s movie, and it’s great (and the only winner of both Best Picture Oscar and the Palme d’Or at Cannes).

Project Runway: A Five Ring Circus

August 7th, 2008 Written by: Kendra · 1 Comment

On this week’s Project Runway, straight off the bat the contestants are taken on a field trip with Tim Gunn. En Route, we learn about the extent of Blayne’s tanning withdrawal, which appears to be getting quite serious. He confesses to Tim that he needs to tan every other day to feel his best. His eyes scan the scenery outside frantically and I truly believe that if he’d seen a tanning salon, he would’ve jumped out of the window. Addicts are like that, you know. For his safety, I think he needs to hit a nice Orbit bed.

The crew arrives at their destination, The Armory Track and Field Center. There they see a dude inline skating around the track. They pretend to be excited but most of them just look bewildered, like, who the hell is this guy and why are we outdoors of all places? The dude turns out to be Apolo Ohno, hottie Olympian, 5-time medalist (2 of them gold) and the only Olympic athlete I have ever so much as had a twinge of a crush on. (I usually like pale, sickly dudes that draw or write, play guitar or have drug problems.) Apolo is there to be the guest judge for the week and to tell them their about the challenge. They are to design an Opening Ceremony Look for the Olympic Summer Games, following in the footsteps of great designers such as Armani and Ralph Lauren. Thankfully, they only have to design for the women.

Movie Releases: Pineapple Express, Elegy, Traveling Pants 2

August 7th, 2008 Written by: Mali · 1 Comment

Well, there’s a nice little group of non-blockbusters this week. What a relief! Although in my mind there’s really not much competition,Pineapple Express is brilliant, go now. Try not too get too baked to forget where the theater is. Or if you’re feeling more like a bit of Tarantino you’ve hot Hell Ride with half the cast of Kill Bill plus Vinnie Jones. Oh yeah! Looking for “cultured” comedy, try Bottle Shock. You can never go wrong with Alan Rickman having to deal with a bunch of Americans. Want something sexy, sleek, and will hopefully get you some at the end of the night? Try Elegy…makes for good “conversation.” Or if you like the sweet and cheesy go for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.

Here is this weeks movie releases with times, cast and crew info, reviews, and trailers. Enjoy!

Tonight on TV: Ace of Cakes, Burn Notice, The Age of Innocence

August 7th, 2008 Written by: Andrew · No Comments

August is finally here which means the baseball playoff race is heating up, football is on its way back and, most importantly, the new TV season is almost here.

That doesn’t mean, however, that we’ve escaped the hell onscreen that is the endless reality programming and reruns of the summer. We must soldier on for a few more work weeks until all our favorite shows come back in September to make the drudgery more bearable.

But don’t despair, below are enough good shows for tonight to get you through at least this evening.

Reality Rundown

  • Ace of Cakes returns to the Food Network with it season premiere tonight at 10:00. The fifth season kicks off with the bakery producing a theme cake for the premiere of “Kung Fu Panda”. No word on whether Jack Black ate the entire thing by himself.

Interview: Jonathan Shaw

August 6th, 2008 Written by: Guest Writer · 10 Comments

Jonathan Shaw. There are many words different people may use to describe him. What some may see as only a shallow, brash and impetuous incendiary; actually is a true philosophical, transcendent soul. With layers of insight waiting to be peeled away.

When I decided to approach Mr. Shaw for an interview, I was filled with apprehension. Once he agreed to the initial questions, I then developed a great anxiety over what to ask him just imagining the responses I would receive. Stepping out in faith, I sent him a basic group of inquiries with instructions to answer all, or only the ones that  moved him to respond. What I expected to learn about this man from his answers was not at all what I brought away from the interview. I can truly say what had begun as intimidation, turned to pure wonder and enlightenment with this man who calls Johnny Depp his soul brother.

One thing, Jonathan shared with me is the fact that when he did tattoo art, he was heavily influenced by the interaction he would share with the subject. Everyone knows that Shaw has inked some of the biggest names in Hollywood so I asked him about one of Hollywoods biggest actors, Johnny Depp’s ink. So how many of Johnny’s tattoos has Jonathan done and were Johnny’s tattoos a collaboration of their great genius together? He shared with me that he has done most of Johnny’s work and that they were always Johnny’s idea.

Celeb Roundup: Awesomeness Squared!

August 6th, 2008 Written by: Kendra · 1 Comment

  • Britney Spears has been tapped to play a murdering lesbian in a Quentin Tarantino film. Yes! Every girl’s dream role. (Read: I’m not being sarcastic.) Brit Brit has been asked to play stripper Varla in a remake of the 1965 cult film Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Quentin must’ve seen her work on that Doogie Howser kid’s new show, (you know, ole’ what’s it called). A source said, “It is perfect Tarantino material. He wanted to get Britney first. She’s playing the most important character.” This is the best thing that’s ever happened to that girl. And I mean ever. I am not going to judge this. I am just going to trust in the genius casting instinct of Tarantino, sit back and wait for the magic. Because, you know it’ll either suck (awesome!) or be awesome (double-awesome!). Crossing my fingers for awesomeness squared.
  • Paris Hilton fires back at John McCain with a video of her own. And, hers is much funnier. I’d be pretty embarrassed if I were a politician and I were being made fun of by Paris Hilton. And, worse, everyone is laughing with her, not at her. I think this is the first time I’ve been on her side of, well, anything. But, in this video, she’s funny, and dare I say, borderline lovable! John McCain is probably not sweatin’ it, though, because it’s on the internet and who knows how to use that thang anyway? If you haven’t watched her video yet, click here and watch it already! It’s short, I promise.

Once again, director Wayne Wang beautifully explores the struggle between freedom and traditional family duty with the story of a father and daughter who’ve become strangers as a consequence of the censorship of Maoist China. Mr. Shi (a superb performance by Henry O), a retired widower from Beijing, comes to the United States to help his only daughter, Yilan (Faye Yu), through a divorce, but he soon learns that his goals are in direct conflict with her desire to move on. Winner of four awards at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Tonight on TV: Nova, Root of All Evil, Dodgeball

August 6th, 2008 Written by: Andrew · No Comments

Every night until summer ends you need look no further for your daily guide through the summer TV jungle.

This is a rough time for nightly entertainment with the tube awash in repeats and lame reality shows, but there’s still good stuff available to get you through the work week.

Let the picks begin. . .

Reality Rundown

  • It’s catharsis time for NBC as it attempts to make up for airing the horribly exploitative “Baby Borrowers” with an hour-long town hall meeting entitled “Lessons Learned” Let me guess, people will do anything to get on TV?
  • At 10:00, HBO takes us inside NFL training camp for the second straight season with its series “Hard Knocks”. Last year, we journeyed through the pretty mundane Kansas City Chiefs camp, this time around it’s the Dallas Cowboys featuring the rain king Pacman Jones, T.O., and Jessica Simpson’s boyfriend, Tony Romo. Seems more like a soap opera than a football team.

New Website: Reserve a Table in LA Today

August 6th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

Los Angeles can be a bitch sometimes. Trying to get a table at a popular restaurant can sometimes seem next to impossibly. You either have to book them two months in advance or eat you appetizers at 5pm or 11pm. I think I’ve wanted to take my boyfriend somewhere special a number of times but have realized that there is just no way to get in last minute. Although I know some people think ahead and book a birthday dinner 3 months it advance, but for me, it’s more like 3 nights in advance. Who the hell has time for this stuff? And it shouldn’t be so damn impossible for you and a loved one to go out to a nice meal together at 7:30.

Well now there is a website to change all that! LA.TableExhange.com has tables available at any many more, for you at 7:30pm tonight, tomorrow, whenever you want them. It costs $10ish to “reserve” the table, which I admit is a bit annoying, but I know many of you have been in a jam before and $10 is really a great deal for making someone else’s night special. Hell at those places I’m sure the tax won’t even add up to $10.
