Reading 'Upcoming events'

Apparently everyone has run out of films to releases. Big and small. We’ve got two films to pick from. One is about a hitman with Nicolas Cage, Bangkok Dangerous. The catch phrase for this movie is “Nothing is deadlier… than a hitman… that hits back.” I guess what my problem is, is that we’re not seeing anything new. You have the rules, then you break the rules, and the love interest that you shouldn’t have. At least Wanted tried to do something new with the genre, this just looks like I’ve seen it before. Then you have Everybody Wants to Be Italian, where the slogan is quite literally the title. I’ll let you be the judge.
Here are this week’s film releases with cast and crew information, reviews, show times and tickets, and trailers! Enjoy…

However slight the undertones, this week in the literary world rests on the notion of benefiting self by giving back to others. Do unto others; what goes around comes around; the George Bailey principle. However you choose to phrase it, what we do, give, or say doesn’t go unnoticed by the universe, even in seemingly minuscule instances. And in a society whose measure of value seems to be how well we function in its machine (and its machine only), that’s not too shabby a consolation.
- Used Book Sale | Thursday, September 4, 2008 | 1:00 - 4:00 pm | Chinatown Branch Library - Map | Offerings at sales largely consist of donated books, so if you’ve a few novels that you think might fare well in a new residence, it might be worth it to find out whether or not they can offered for others to rummage through. For more info, call (213) 620-0925.

Someone recently told me that SWAG stands for Shit-We-All-Get. I guess the PG version would be “Stuff” instead of “Shit.” Oh well! Apparently, it can also stand for Shopping, Walking and Giving. At least for this event it does.
If you’re a fan of getting free “stuff” than you need to head over to Beverly Blvd between 6-9pm because tomorrow, September 4th, they are having the Beverly Hills Block Party in honor of the Saban Clinic.
Participants include Beverly Hills Juice, Boutique M, Bungalow Salon, DAVINCI Custom Furniture, Décor de Paris, IN SEOUL, JIAN BBQ, Joseph Walker Boutique, Kevan Hall Designs, Kim Salmela Atelier, LA Skin, Scent Bar, Mandarette Chinese Café, MASSE Boutique, Muscle Mechanics LA, The Natural Face Place, Pane e Vino, persimmon, Orientalism Furniture, Recess, Richard Bowman & Xavier Othon, Beverly Spine and Wellness Center, The Valley of the Dolls and MORE.

Labor Day has come and gone and the fall premieres are set to begin, making this the last week for the Summer TV Picks. Enjoy.
Reality Rundown
- The CW whips out its second two-hour premiere in as many days as “America’s Next Top Model” returns at 8:00. Watch the skinny people as bitter ex-super models point out their flaws.
- Get one last dose of “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Dallas Cowboys” before the NFL season kicks off this week. Ahhh, the return of NFL football and new TV, fall is so great! The HBO doc continues at 10:00.

Labor Day has come and gone and the fall premieres are set to begin, making this the last week for the Summer TV Picks. Enjoy.
Reality Rundown
Time to lay to rest the endless onslaught of lame network reality filler. And what better to way than taking one last ride on that pain train?
- There are two opportunities tonight as ABC trots out another episode of its inexplicable “Wanna Bet?” series. For those who haven’t watched, also known as Americans, this series features contestants performing wacky stunts while a panel of pseudo-celebrities wager on the outcome. It’s yours at 9:00.
- It wouldn’t be summer without “Big Brother”. The tenth installment of the series is apparently its best ever, at least that’s what the commercials claim. Catch it at 9:00 on CBS before the good shows come back.
