Aviod the Multiplex: Los Angeles Plays Itself, True Confession, Red Dust…

September 11th, 2008 Written by: Tom von Logue Newth · No Comments

The Aero:

More on this elsewhere, but I can’t omit it from the week’s highlights, cos it’s really good. It’s like a secret history of LA through the movies - all those backdrops that look so movie-anonymous, or buildings that look so strangely familiar, alongside all the landmarks and neighborhoods that no longer exist except almost by accident in cinema history. The film takes a turn for the political in the last hour (it’s three hours long) - it’s just as fertile an area as the geography and as a result feels a bit skimped and tacked on - but overall, a marvelous feast for the eyes, and a terrific portrait of the home of the movies.

Now we get to the good stuff! Burn After Reading, Towelhead, and Flow: For Love of Water are all influential, smart and amazing films for you to go out and see this weekend.

Burn After Reading is s new film by the Coen Brothers with John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, and Richard Jenkins. How could you go wrong? Then there is Alan Ball’s new film, Towelhead, a dark comedy with Aaron Eckhart, Toni Collette, Maria Bello, Peter Macdissi and Summer Bishi’s. Then you have one of the highest recommended documentaries of the year, Flow: For Love of Water, which talks about how companies are capitalizing and destroying our water supply which is running out!

If none of those get you going, there are also three completely different films, The Family That Preys, Righteous Kill, and The Women opening this week. Whether you’re into drama, action, or female bonding, there is something for you.

Literary Round-Up: Signings, Book Sale, Performances, Open Reading

September 10th, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden · No Comments

This week in the literary world revolves around the idea of exposure. Plenty of opportunities are available for you to be exposed to others’ experiences - in the form of a memoir composed around rebellion and lust, stirring public performances by established talent, and a few bound thoughts and ideas in the form of books. But also, we’ve an open poetry/prose/spoken word reading, so as not to leave you pent-up and wanting for release.

  • Signing and Tasting | Thursday, September 11, 2008 | 7:30 pm | Village Books - Map | Nancy Mehagian signs and discusses Siren’s Feast: An Edible Odyssey. Described as “part memoir, part cookbook, large part raucous adventure”, it’s bound to include the very best parts this life has to offer, but I’m definitely curious to know how much raucous adventure one can get. To order a copy, click here or pick one up in-store. For more info, call (310) 454-4063.

Some of your may already be uncontrollably jumping off the walls others of you may be asking WTF? What’s a “Pinball Tournament and Arcade Game”? Well, it’s awesome. It’s like going to the Natural History Museum and riding the dinosaurs, going to a car show and driving all the cars… you pick an analogy that works for you. To enter you make small donation to the charity TACA - Talk About Curing Autism - and then you get to play as many freakin’ arcade games and pinball machines until your fingers fall off. All the games at the event are free play, so there’s nothing stopping you!

If you are brave enough you may even decide to try your luck at the PINBALL TOURNAMENT (put an echo to that) where you will compete against other players and celebrities to win your very own Pinball Machine or $1000 CASH!

Also, there will be amazing raffles, catering, a full (pay) bar, and an auction.

So come, enjoy the food and games, and help participate in something good for others. Really there is no better combo.

LA Film: Thom Andersen at the Aero

September 9th, 2008 Written by: Mali · 2 Comments

On Thursday, September 11th, 12th, and 13th at 7:30 PM, LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF, 2003, 169 min. Dir. Thom Andersen. Voted Best Doc of 2004 by the Village Voice and one of our most requested encore screenings, will be played at the Aero Theater on Montana. On September 13th, director Thom Andersen will appear for a discussion after the film.

If you like in LA and love film, you can’t miss this event. This film will only be screened in theaters and never releases on DVD. Now is your chance, to see hundreds of archival and film clips reveal an almost secret history of the City of Angels.

Filmmaker Thom Andersen, a life-long Angelino, works in a tradition pioneered by Godard, Chris Marker and Agnes Varda. His enthralling essay investigates ’50s B-movies that use Los Angeles as the epitome of urban sleaze, science fiction classics that revel in destroying its tallest buildings, and film noirs that paint it the nation’s capital for adultery and murder. Ever think about why Los Angeles’s modern architectural classics (by Neutra and Frank Lloyd Wright) are favored housing for villains? It’s a movie for anyone who loves (or hates) Los Angeles and who wonders what they may have missed by not spending more hours in the dark.
