Idle Doodlings: Miscegenation in the Free World

“Comic writers don’t have to invent characters. The funniest people are all around you, in the streetcars, on the sidewalk, everywhere. Keep your eyes open.” – Winsor McCay, 1924

Camped outside on the concrete embankment jutting out of Sunset Blvd.’s Amoeba Music awaits a perfect crow’s nest for an observer to commit auscultation on this booming music/DVD haberdashery. What a spot to listen well to the very breathing of this place so alive with a kaleidoscopic diaspora—the very corn of LA’s flocculent cream.

And thiestes be damned when they read our suppositions!

Stuck-in-Traffic Song of the Week

January 9th, 2008 Written by: Keith · No Comments

This is a new weekly article I am starting. This is dedicated to those of us who spend hours a day stuck in the daily grind of getting to and from jobs that we may or may not completely despise. When you’re bumper to bumper and you have exceeded your monthly daytime minutes on the cell plan, you have only one friend…music.

Stuck in Traffic Song of the Week for 1/9–1/15 : “I Can’t Drive, 55” By Sammy Hagar

(This video should be watched before reading further… really, at least give it a minute…here it is live from Farm Aid 1985)

The road you are about to travel down is not an easy one, but know that you are not alone. As you are very well aware, all of you will now be the constant focus of news agencies world wide. Jon StewartOh, the cruel, cruel irony of the WGA strike.

It silenced TV darlings Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert for the past nine weeks, during which the strike itself would have provided immeasurable material, but so many other noteworthy events have been transpiring: Primaries, Jamie Lynn Spears, rain here in LA…

But fret not, gentle readers, for tonight we shall be reunited!

Upcoming Event: Carol Burnett with Steve Martin at Town Hall!

January 3rd, 2008 Written by: Emberly Modine · No Comments

Born Standing Up 1/2/08EMThis month on the 24th, Town Hall will be hosting an evening with the venerable comedian, actor and author Steve Martin. He will be discussing his autobiography “Born Standing Up” with iconic comedienne Carol Burnett.

Martin has described his book as “a biography rather than an autobiography, because I am writing about someone I used to know”. The New York Times has a great review of the book here. If the excerpts are any indication of the reflective depths Martin is capable of; I really believe that a conversation with Carol Burnette; an equally accomplished colleague, would be revealing, if not completely hilarious.

This event is sure to sell out fast, get tickets soon!

Interview with a Comedian Christy Eidson

December 18th, 2007 Written by: Matt · 1 Comment

Christ 07-12-18 You may or may not be wondering just what goes on inside the head of a comedian. In my personal experience it can be both a dark and scary place; or a colorful and hilarious new page on which to draw from. As luck would have it, today we found a happy place.

I’m sitting here with up and coming comic, Christy Eidson, from Millersville Tennesse, who also happens to be a personal friend. Christy is 35 but if anyone asks she’s 27, pasty white don’t crack. She’s been doing Comedy for 7 years now and was influenced by Eddie Murphy, Andy Kaufman, Bill Cosby, and SNL. Plenty more but I won’t list them all.

So let’s get down to it…

Do you have anything special that helps you prepare for a show?

I do. I have a preshow ceremonial fart. It’s a tradition that I started a while ago.

My Favorite Spot - Hollywood Improv

December 13th, 2007 Written by: Matt · No Comments

Hollywood Improv It never fails. When I tell people I’m a comic, I get asked a number of questions which I have now come to expect.

1. Can you tell me a joke? Which I don’t do, so don’t ask.
2. Do you write your own material? This one always baffles me - what kind of comedian doesn’t write his or her own stuff? Apparently some have others write their material for them. Websters dictionary defines this as “laziness”.

Further on down the ladder of questions is, where do you like to hang out?
