Political Poll: Will Palin Hurt or Help

September 3rd, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

As you all know, Sarah Palin has been pulled into the Presidential race with McCain, in hopes of getting both the conservative vote as well as the female vote (or possible the Hillary vote). Since Palin’s first appearance she has apparently been MIA. She even missed a chance to pick up a porcelain baby award from pro-lifers (darn!). But still very little is known about Palin. We know that “Core conservatives are smitten with the 44-year-old governor, who opposes abortion in all cases, including rape and incest. And millions of dollars in donations have poured in” and that she’s from Alaska. That’s about it.

McCain has made a strong choice, but it has yet to be seen what kind of affect it will have on voters. Dan Bartlett, a former counselor to President Bush stated that “She is either going to be a wild success or a spectacular failure.” So what do you think? Whether you’re left, right, or center, you must have some thoughts…

Michael Phelps: Anything is Possible

August 17th, 2008 Written by: Bobbie · No Comments

When everyone says you can’t do something, it just shows you that anything is possible.”

Those were the words spoken by Michael Phelps, after he battled back from 7th place, to just out-touch Milorad Cavic, in the 100-meter butterfly. This win was his seventh gold medal in Beijing, tying him with Mark Spitz, the only other Olympian and fellow swimmer, to receive seven gold medals in one Olympics. Last night he won his final race making him the only man to ever win eight gold medals.

However, these words have more significance to this young man than the general public realizes. Phelps, dealing with the challenge of having ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, has overcome the obstacles associated with this neurological condition, to become possibly the greatest Olympian the world has ever seen.

Humor: Embedded at McCain’s Barbecue, Ribs Only

August 13th, 2008 Written by: Mark Biskeborn · No Comments

McCain’s daughter cam cords a friendly barbeque where dad meets with lobbyists and other campaign contributors to discuss what they expect in return for the cash.

SEDONA, Arizona – Relaxing at his sprawling rustic ranch compound this last weekend, Sen. John McCain hosted a barbecue for friends. Only a few months ago, John McCain III, had been left behind as another piece of flattened road kill on the presidential campaign trail. Now, he might cinch the GOP nomination.

I witnessed the event, not as a guest but as bartender, though I sipped more drinks than I mixed. After having responded to a local newspaper ad for busboy, I got a job. A journalist in need of a little extra pocket money, I figured his gig answered my prayers to embed among the rich and famous at McCain’s posh party.

News: The Skinny on What You Need to Know in the World Today

August 12th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

  • US guns with Mexican cartel - Well we’ve made it impossible for people who want to work in our country to cross the border BUT much easier for high-powered automatic weapons and ammunition to cross. Such weapons can easily cross the border, virtually unchecked into Mexico, fueling a war among drug traffickers, the army and police that has left thousands dead.
  • Art looks at immigration (Photo from exhibit featured right)-Just to contrast that, you have a bunch of bone-chilling artwork of migrants almost have become cliches in our globalized world of perpetual human movement: Mexican families sloshing across the Rio Grande in the dead of night, young African men huddled over dull campfires in Spanish detainee camps. But other, less commonplace images challenge preconceived ideas of what it means to be an “undocumented worker,” “illegal alien” or simply a person with no fixed home or identity, stranded between shifting borders.

Local News: 888

August 8th, 2008 Written by: Mali · 1 Comment

OK… what’s up with 888? Well I’ll tell you!. 8/8/08 is the day in Chinese culture when their lucky numbers appear three times in the date! 888 is the most celebrated and “lucky” numbers in Chinese culture, especially when they appear three times. So why is eight a lucky number in Chine culture well.

Eight in Cantonese, baat, sounds like the word for prosperity, faat, which extends to connote all things lucky. It explains the abundance of eights in phone numbers belonging to Chinese and the scores of Chinese businesses that feature an eight.

It is also why China’s Olympic planners chose to kick off the Games on Aug. 8 at 8:08 p.m.

The combination of fortuitous timing and the start of the historic sporting event would figure to command significance in Southern California’s Chinese community equal to, say, Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July and the Super Bowl rolled into one.

US Government: Conspiracy Theories

July 28th, 2008 Written by: Mark Biskeborn · No Comments

The media, TV journalists in particular, continue to leave some important questions lying dormant beneath the dusty cover of “conspiracy theory.” Why did W decide to invade Iraq while 15 of the 19 terrorists of 9/11 came from Saudi Arabia? Why is Saudi Arabia a cradle for such terrorists?

Years ago, when W still had some credibility, he and his Roving gang could ridicule anyone who spoke against his actions. Whenever brave souls dared to question the Divine Decider, he and his cronies dismissed the dissenters as nutcase conspiracy theorists. And they continue to do so even after the Iraq War has officially run its miserable course to disastrous guerrilla warfare and our economy whimpers.

Cynthia McKinney: Obama’s Worst Nightmare

July 16th, 2008 Written by: Alex Goodman · No Comments

Cynthia McKinneyAG08-07-15Barack Obama is no longer the most historic candidate in this year’s presidential election. When the Green Party nominated Cynthia McKinney, a former Congresswoman who happens to be both African-American AND a woman, as their presidential candidate, the historicality of Obama’s campaign was thrown into question in the eyes of the dozens of Americans who were aware that the Green Party had nominated a candidate.

McKinney poses a challenge to the Democratic candidate in other ways as well, taking strongly liberal stances across the board that make Obama look much more like a moderate. She is a firm environmentalist and supporter of same-sex couples’ rights, and advocates the legalization of medicinal marijuana. Perhaps what is most interesting about McKinney, however, is what - or rather, who - she is not: Ralph Nader. Nader earned nearly 3% of the national popular vote as the Green Party candidate in the 2000 election, grabbing himself a spot in the history books both as the party’s most successful presidential candidate and as the man considered by some to be the reason for George W. Bush’s victory, having taken away so many votes from Democratic candidate Al Gore.
