In light of the last recall I have to say…I HAVE HAD ENOUGH! What is wrong with people these days?! The main reason for the recall was due to the torture of downed cows…making for questionable meat. The problem lies however, not so much in the publics lack of investing time and thought into a proper solution for a problem that has plagued us since the mad cow epidemic, in so much that an apparent ‘laziness’ is what is keeping us from protecting the very animals we depend on. We use animals for company, clothing, labor and the obvious…food and yet we have absolutely no respect for their importance and vital contribution to our lives.
As of today I have, along with my family and most of my friends decided to go vegetarian. I love meat mind you…but I love animals more. And because of that love, have spent hours researching the internet for meat alternatives to keep the body and mind healthy and sound. Aside from the obvious fish, tofu and vegetable alternatives, I came across a very interesting Peruvian dish EXTREMELY high in protein that actually tastes delicious!
Quinoa, a supergrain characterizes itself for the quality of its proteins given by the essential amino acids such as: isoleucine leucine, lysine, metionine, fenilalanine, treonine, triftófane y valine. Concentration of lysine in the protein of the quinoa is almost twice in comparison to the cereals and minerals. In addition of the B Complex Vitamins, it contains C and E vitamins, tiamine, riboflavine and a high content of minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and y calcium among others. It can be made as a salad, just add cucumbers, olives a touch of balsamic and eat it cold…so good. Or make a hot entree of it with grilled vegetables.
Cheese and cereals are great sources of vitamins and proteins as well…I guess what I’m trying to say is…to make a significant change and feel good about saving living species…does not have to be so hard.

Thanks Nora! I’m reading Fast Food Nation right now. Don’t think I could force myself to eat beef if I was starving to death….

Welcome to the dark side! Many congratulations to you and your friends and family! Not only are you helping the environment, the earth and it’s animals, but most importantly, your own health and well-being.

I became a vegetarian three years ago after no longer being able to stomach the taste of blood in my mouth after eating a steak. Better late than never. I was already a big fan of the non-meat cuisine found in Indian, Thai and Middle Eastern restaurants, so it wasn’t a difficult transition. I phased out meat first, then chicken and finally fish. I only eat tofu deepfried and I’m not a soy fan. I eat organic eggs and diary products.
I don’t force my beliefs on others, but I sincerely hope that more and more people - especially young ones - will go vegetarian or vegan. Better for humans, for animals, for the planet.

Blood sausage is one of the most delicious things in the world…
Rather than go cold turkey, I recommend going organic free-range… It’s unrealistic to think going veg will have a significant impact on society, but the more people go organic free-range, the more major agro-businesses will start to farm that way.

Going vegetarian not only has an effect on the economy (especially in light of the fact your whole family is going to stop eating meat), but has a huge effect on the environment. The animal industry is the biggest polluter on the face of the planet, and every dollar you DON’T spend on it, is a small vote against them and their disregard for all life forms.
The problem with organic and free range is that big business has bullied the USDA so much that many healthy labels like “free range” don’t mean shit.

this is great! i’ve been a veggie for almost 10 years now. quinoa is the best– boil it with mushroom or veggie bouillion for an extra-tastey flavor.
