This Side of Paradise: Body and Landscape in L.A. Photographs
The Huntington Library
Ends September 15

The Huntington Library’s photography exhibit, This Side of Paradise: Body and Landscape in L.A. Photographs, ends this week, timed perfectly with the close of another L.A. summer. In the show’s last week, you can go to the secluded botanical paradise of the many gardens at the Huntington before getting all thoughtful about the depiction of your complicated hometown in film over the last hundred and forty odd years.

Since 1860, both the physical landscape of the region, as well as the physical nature and awareness of the people living there, has been captured in celluloid. This photography attends to the complexities of the South Land, a place that any Los Angelino must feel bittersweet about. One must learn quickly in LA the difference between appearances and reality, an aphorism that the show’s photography points to. True, L.A. is the nation’s capital for fame, success, leisure, and glamour, but is also home to racial tensions, merciless traffic, and unfulfilled dreams. The photographs in the show represent the physicality of this binary that makes Los Angeles so alluring, yet somehow treacherous.

David Duchovny’s Sex Addition: Blame it on Los Angeles, Says FOX

September 5th, 2008 Written by: Liana Aghajanian · No Comments

As you know by now, our one and only beloved Mulder has entered rehab for sex addiction of all things. For some reason, he felt the need to announce this to the world. In a statement to US Magazine, Duchovny said that he voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction and asked for respect and privacy as him and his family dealt with the situation. Wikipedia describes sex addicts as people who, possibly out of fear of any truly intimate relationship, repeatedly and compulsively try to connect with others through highly impersonal intimate behaviors such as masturbation, empty affairs, frequent visits to prostitutes and voyeurism.

FOX News, more specifically columnist Roger Friedman, decided to way in on Duchovny’s announcement.

When Duchovny is done with the rehab, I’m also told that he and Tea and their kids will complete their move to Manhattan’s Upper East Side from Hollywood. They will be very welcome here, as Tea is much in demand work-wise. Duchovny will have more “Californication” and plenty of offers. New York doesn’t solve all your problems, but it’s a much more realistic place to live than Los Angeles.

Dodger Beat: Dodgers Closing In

September 5th, 2008 Written by: Anthony · No Comments

With 22 games left in the season it is now do or die time for the Dodgers.  They currently sit 1.5 games out of first place, behind the D-Backs of course.  They start a crucial three game series against those first place D-Backs and they have to sweep if not, at least win two out of the three games.  If the Dodgers end up sweeping the series it will vault them into a 1.5 game lead.  If they win two of three they will be only .5 games back of the D-Backs which is better than 1.5.

The end of the season is near and what better way to make up ground on the first place team than to beat the first place team.  Not only is this series important because they are playing the D-Backs, but after this series the Dodgers go on a long road trip.  They will be on a 10 game road trip and it is always harder to win on the road than at home.  The road trip will consist of the Padres, Rockies and the Pirates.

LA News Skinny: Bobcats Take Over Homes, Brother and Sister Died Natural Causes…

September 4th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

PhoBrother and sister found dead in home both died of natural causes, contrary to all evidence - OK there is something seriously messed up here. The coroner said that 51-year-old Daniel Savage, who swallowed three bullets and had black shoe polish smeared on his face, died of a stroke and this his 57-year-old sister Jacquelyn, who was found with blood on her mouth and bruises on her face and neck, died of a heart disease. Something REALLY isn’t adding up here.

School can longer ban bible studies group - Until now, students had been prevented from starting a Bible club at Esperanza High School in Anaheim. School District officials argued that only curriculum-related groups are allowed on campus, but because they allow the Red Cross club, they therefore must allow the Bible club. So Jesus, take your spot on the lawn.

Movie News: ‘Milk’ Trailer, U.K. And U.S. Ban Movie Posters

September 4th, 2008 Written by: Liana Aghajanian · No Comments

  • Milk trailer released -The much anticipated “Milk” movie trailer has been released. Director Gus Van Sant heads up the project with Sean Penn as gay rights icon Harvey Milk. Milk was an activist and politician and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America ( In 1977, he was voted to the city supervisor’s board of San Francisco). In 1978, Milk and San Francisco’s mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by another city supervisor named Dan White. Watch the “Milk” trailer and contemplate how many Oscars you think Penn might receive.
  • The U.K has a bone to pick with “Wanted” - The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that movie posters for the Angelina Jolie-James McAvoy thriller “Wanted” glamorize guns and violence and must be banned after receiving somewhere around 17 complaints. “We acknowledged most viewers would understand the posters reflected the content of an action film. However, we considered that because the ads featured a glamorous actress, action poses, several images of, or related to guns and aspirational text, they could be seen to glamorize the use of guns and violence.” the ASA said in a statement.

Know Your LA Bands: The Pacific

September 4th, 2008 Written by: Seraphina · 2 Comments

LA.CityZine brings you the laid back band, The Pacific, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. After hearing their name, your first thoughts may gravitate towards where the Pacific is, what its beaches are like and how close it is to the city. The band with same name, pulls those same enjoyable vibes from SoCal and brings you the breezy side of Los Angeles in their music. Enveloped in the honest, good old fashioned rock and roll fun, their sound brings a familiar vibe to all who live under the sun. Untainted by the grimey hands of the entertainment industry, The Pacific manages to pull together sounds of pure creativity without being too worried about the pressures of Hollywood eyes. They do this exceptionally well with their feel good rock harmonies, videos and silly personas they let loose as musicians who are anything but pretentious. Issues are dealt with in their lyrics as any band addresses important matters, but they do this without coming off as jaded. Staying true to themselves, their music proves you can still make a statement without becoming overbearing but empowering instead.
