Movie Releases: Bangkok Dangerous and Everybody Wants to Be Italian

September 4th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

Apparently everyone has run out of films to releases. Big and small. We’ve got two films to pick from. One is about a hitman with Nicolas Cage, Bangkok Dangerous. The catch phrase for this movie is “Nothing is deadlier… than a hitman… that hits back.” I guess what my problem is, is that we’re not seeing anything new. You have the rules, then you break the rules, and the love interest that you shouldn’t have. At least Wanted tried to do something new with the genre, this just looks like I’ve seen it before. Then you have Everybody Wants to Be Italian, where the slogan is quite literally the title. I’ll let you be the judge.

Here are this week’s film releases with cast and crew information, reviews, show times and tickets, and trailers! Enjoy…

Movie Releases: Babylon A.D., Traitor, College…

August 28th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

The good thing is last week had so many great releases you could not have seen them all yet! (I’m working on my back-handed compliments, how is it going?) Although this week may look like slim pickings I have a feeling there are goodies that have yet to be exploited.

I would recommend Traitor, it definitely stands out among the rest as a solid film with two amazing actors leading it (featured right). Or maybe you prefer a western for those who love kung foo? Then check out Sukiyaki Western Django. There was no way Tarantino could resist that. Ballet Shoes has Emma Watson (Aka Hermione) and was released in 2007 as a TV film which makes me a bit nervous, but it definitely has potential! As for Babylon A.D., Disaster Movie, and College, I know they have built in audiences that will love them, they’re just not quite my thing.

So here they are, this week’s film releases with cast and crew information, reviews, show times and tickets, and trailers! Enjoy…

Movie Releases: Hamlet 2, The Rocker, Death Race

August 21st, 2008 Written by: Mali · 4 Comments

Bring on the comedies! Big, small, bring them all! This weekend you have a TON of new comedies to choose from. From Hamlet 2 with Hamlet and… Jesus? The House Bunny with plenty slightly inappropriate and funny jokes. The Rocker, has Rainn Wilson as a washed up old drummer playing high school gigs. Done, sold. The Longshots, a story about a GIRL playing football, oh come now. For some educated/food humor I Served the King of England is getting great reviews. I.O.U.S.A., well the joke is kind of on us. I think this is a film everyone HAS to see. Sadly, only the people who already understand these problems will go see it, but one can still hope. Then out “serious” film of the week, Death Race, I’m sure you got some SERIOUS explosions in this.

So here they are, this week’s film releases with cast and crew information, reviews, showtimes and tickets, and trailers! Enjoy…

Movie Releases: Tropic Thunder, Mirrors, Vicky Cristina Barcelona…

August 14th, 2008 Written by: Mali · 1 Comment

There are a LOT of potentially really good films to pick from this week and then are a few others that I know I’ll be passing on. I personally recommend Tropic Thunder. Unlike, PIneapple Express it’s not a requirment to be stoned, merely a suggestion. If you want a sexy, interesting, indie flick, you’ve got Vicky Cristina Barcelona or The Girl Cut in Two. Both have pretty ladies, weird sex and insane love. Henry Poole Is Here looks like it may be great as long as it doesn’t get too preachy. All the teens on summer break who might FINALLY be starting to get over Dark Knight will enjoy Mirrors, a good creepy horror film. As for, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, I couldn’t even make it through the trailer. I just never caught that bug. I think is you’re going for animation, go for Fly Me to the Moon 3. It is a bit off they’re both opening the same weekend, no?

So there they are! This week’s movie releases with showtimes and tickets, reviews, cast and crew info, and of course, TRAILERS! Also, check out our Tropic Thunder red carpet coverage.

Movie Releases: Pineapple Express, Elegy, Traveling Pants 2

August 7th, 2008 Written by: Mali · 1 Comment

Well, there’s a nice little group of non-blockbusters this week. What a relief! Although in my mind there’s really not much competition,Pineapple Express is brilliant, go now. Try not too get too baked to forget where the theater is. Or if you’re feeling more like a bit of Tarantino you’ve hot Hell Ride with half the cast of Kill Bill plus Vinnie Jones. Oh yeah! Looking for “cultured” comedy, try Bottle Shock. You can never go wrong with Alan Rickman having to deal with a bunch of Americans. Want something sexy, sleek, and will hopefully get you some at the end of the night? Try Elegy…makes for good “conversation.” Or if you like the sweet and cheesy go for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.

Here is this weeks movie releases with times, cast and crew info, reviews, and trailers. Enjoy!

Film: Wayne Wang in Person at the Aero

August 6th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

Tonight and tomorrow at the Aero Theater on Montana in Santa Monica, Director Wayne Wang will be in attendance with two new cuts of his latest films as well as two screenings of his other films. Wang is a well known for his amazingly broad career in the industry. He has worked on many different types of films, from indie hit Chas is Missing and Smoke to The Joy Luck Club and Maid in Manhattan. Wang explores cultural, racial and economic issues from all ends of the spectrum. This special tribute showcases several of his finest works, including sneak previews of his latest, A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS and THE PRINCESS OF NEBRASKA.

The Double Feature begins at 7:30pm with a sneak preview of A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS:

Once again, director Wayne Wang beautifully explores the struggle between freedom and traditional family duty with the story of a father and daughter who’ve become strangers as a consequence of the censorship of Maoist China. Mr. Shi (a superb performance by Henry O), a retired widower from Beijing, comes to the United States to help his only daughter, Yilan (Faye Yu), through a divorce, but he soon learns that his goals are in direct conflict with her desire to move on. Winner of four awards at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Movie Releases: The Mummy, Midnight Meat Train, Swing Vote, Frozen River

July 31st, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

Poor Brendan Fraser, Maria Bello, Jet Li, and John Hannah (who I love). They’re amazing, but The Mummy is all set for FAIL. It’s just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe a winter release would have been better? Although, who knows! I may be proven wrong (I secretly hope it does). Then there’s the The Midnight Meat Train. I personally love Vinnie Jones and a good creepy horror film. Although again, perhaps better for the fall? Swing Vote looks fun if you can get past the absurdity that our next president relies on one vote. Hell you can be off by thousands of votes and still win, Bush proved that. And if you’re willing to see a great film that will most likely make you cry your eyes out, than Frozen River is definitely the film for you. It’s a doozy.

So without further ado this weeks movie releases with reviews, cast and crew info, showtimes and tickets, and of course, trailers!

Movie Releases: Step Brothers, Brideshead Revisited, The X-Files: I Want to Believe

July 24th, 2008 Written by: Mali · No Comments

Well I’m sure plenty of you will still be going out to see the Dark Knight, but for those of you who have seen it nine times and are thinking about possibly trying something new there are plenty of good films to choose from this week. First of all you have Will Ferrel and John C. Reilly doing what they do best, acting like idiots in Step Brothers. I’m so in. These two are like peanut butter and jelly, when combined they’re f-ing amazing. For those of you looking for something smart, edgy, and oh so English, Brideshead Revisited is the perfect pick. I have a crush on Emma Thompson, which means I’m so there. The one thing I won’t be seeing is, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, just the theme song brings me back to not being able to sleep when I was younger. But I’m a chicken. You go and tell me all about it! American Teen is well, the real life Breakfast Club, most likely you as a teen! Should be fun.

So without further ado this weeks movie releases with reviews, cast and crew info, showtimes and tickets, and of course, trailers!

Avoid The Multiplex: A Clockwork Orange, Get Carter, Sebastiane

July 17th, 2008 Written by: Tom von Logue Newth · No Comments

The Aero:

A marvelous romp through early Godard, from the vibrant A Bout de Souffle, his debut, up almost to the point where he abandoned “conventional” cinema for the formal and political experiments that dominated his work to the expense of his popularity if not critical stock. Amazingly, in this 8-year period he churned out 14 features and ten shorts, all of them desperately inquisitive about Cinema and about male/female relations, some of them political, and all of them overflowing with joyful celebration of the possibilities of film. A Bout de Souffle is a wannabe gangster film, freewheeling round Paris with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg in a cute crop and tight Herald Tribune tee. Une Femme est une femme introduces us to Anna Karina, Godard’s muse for the next few years, who plays a stripper who wants a baby; she’s equally happy to have it by boyfriend Jean-Claude Brialy or pal Belmondo.
