CD Review: Rumspringa EP

June 29th, 2008 Written by: Joelle · No Comments

Rumpspringa JW 6-28-08 On June 24th, Rumspringa released their debut EP, giving L.A. fans who have enjoyed Rumspringa’s Monday night residency at The Echo this month something tide them over until the band comes back again. This funk rock duo utilizes an intriguing mélange of musical styles, from ambient blues rock to an almost old-school rap. Singer Joey Stevens probes with a limber rockstar drawl even undertaking a Tom Waits-like raspy growl, emphasized in “Skulls and Phones.” The lyrics, ranging from simple and straightforward to obscure and dismal, effortlessly find their place within the rhythmic groove rolling through each song.

Rumspringa’s EP succeeds in developing six tracks of unique engaging sound that pulls the listener in with a laid-back hip musical vibe. Rumspringa’s synthesis of various musical elements contributes to an alternative rock style similar to what multi-instrumentalist Beck is known and loved for.

Music Tonight: Meshell Ndegeocello, Wierd Al Yankovic, Fleet Foxes

FleetFoxes-BRM-062908

Hey kids! The weekend comes to an end with some great shows. If you’ve never seen Meshell Ndegeocello perform live then do not miss out on the opportunity to do so at The Key Club.  If you’re in the mood for a sillier, more lighthearted show, Weird Al Yankovik is gracing the Ventura Theatre with his strange  and oh, so catchy remakes of pop songs.  My top pick for the evening, however, would have to be Fleet Foxes.  Their sound is the perfect combination of earthy folk and ethereal harmony.  Whatever you decide, you should definitely end the weekend musically with one of the following shows:

Know Your LA Bands: The Dollyrots

June 24th, 2008 Written by: Seraphina · 3 Comments

Dollyrots-SL-062408LA.CityZine brings you bratty yet infectious punk rock band, The Dollyrots, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. As they say in their bio, they are one girl and two boys. Long time friends Kelly Ogden (bass/vox) and Luis Cabezas (guitar/vox) decided that all their experiences together since the 8th grade might sound good if they were disguised in a punk rock attitude and addictive pop sound. With that thought in mind and some unfortunate political history, the two started playing shows all over the west coast and met Chris Black (drums) along the way.

Their music has been featured in numerous television shows and the band, themselves, were even featured in a Kohl’s commercial with their song, “Because I’m Awesome.” Avril Lavigne could only wish she could be this obnoxious and sound as good at the same time. With clever lyrics and catchy hooks, you can’t help but want to be on The Dollyrots’ side with anything. They know what they’re saying and they don’t care if you like it or not. On their latest album, also titled Because I’m Awesome and released by Blackheart Records, they churn out witty and energetic tracks.

FrightenedRabbits-BM-062108Check out Belanova at the Ventura Theatre. They are like an 80’s pop band singing in spanish and doing it so well that midway through the concert you’ll be jumping up and down screaming, “me encanta Belanova!” Or head over to The Roxy and check out my top pick for the evening, Frightened Rabbit , whose album “The Midnight Organ Fight” is lyrically brilliant and musically appetizing. Here is a listing of all the artists filling the Los Angeles air with their music tonight:

Know Your LA Bands: The Fling

June 21st, 2008 Written by: Seraphina · 1 Comment

thefling-sl-062108

LA.CityZine brings you, The Fling, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. With a psychedelic groove to their tunes, The Fling brings you mind tripping harmonies spread upon raw folk rock jams. Brothers, Graham and Dustin Loveli, and their band members Justin Ivey and Scotty Cantino hand us a different vibe to cheers our beers to. Think Elliot Smith, The Beatles and the Beach Boys going into the rainforest on acid and returning as one collective group - The Fling. These boys from Long Beach produce a sound that contains a mist of nonchalance yet presents serious musicianship.
