Movie Industry News: Festival Season Is A Celebration Of Disappoinment

September 8th, 2008 Written by: Gillian · No Comments

I personally think it’s way too early for Oscar talk and don’t care too much about the International FIlm Festivals (and won’t until someone decides to send me to Venice to cover one), but that’s what going on this week.  There’s nothing worth seeing at the movies (Bangkok Dangerous??) and fall TV hasn’t even started yet.  Time to go back to bed.

  • In this week’s Gold Derby blog at latimes.com, Tom O’Neill confronts the question: could Peter O’Toole beat out Heath Ledger for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar?  Then he goes on to describe O’Toole’s latest vehicle, Dean Spanley that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, as “lollipop sweet” and “a nice Disney or Hallmark pic.”  The whole (imagined) conflict is at the core of how basically unimportant and random the Oscars are.  How could Ledger’s Joker even be in the same category as a curmudgeonly but sweet grandpa?  The question I want to confront is: How do I get a cushy and completely unnecessary job like Tom O’Neill?

DVD Rental: 50 First Dates

September 2nd, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon · No Comments

One of the greatest romance comedies of our time, 50 First Dates, is my pick for DVD Rental of the Week! Set on the gorgeous Hawaiian Islands, this film features Drew Barrymore as Lucy Whitmore, a sweet girl suffering from a gnarly case of short-term memory loss. Meanwhile Adam Sandler plays womanizer Henry Roth, a man who falls head over heels for Lucy and goes to the greatest of lengths to find a place in her life. Because Lucy is unable to remember Henry’s romantic efforts, he is forced to step up his game a bazillion notches to get the girl. Seriously, homebody really does the cutest, most non-corny romantic shit of all time. Also, the Barrymore-Sandler duo is a hit reminiscent of their dope work together on The Wedding Singer. As usual, this Sandler film is full of laughs, life lessons, and memorable cameos, check it out!

DVD Rental: O

August 19th, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon · No Comments

Trust. Seduction. Betrayal.

Yes ladies and gentleman, I finally have an anti-love film for you. All members of the lonely heart’s club, listen up!

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece Othello, O conveys a contemporary twist on a captivating, old-school story. The young talents of the handsome Mekhi Phifer, Josh Hartnett, and Julia Stiles grace the screen for the duration of the 94 minute film. The film is set in an all-white boarding high school where Phifer’s character, Odin, plays the basketball star who is deeply in love with Desi (played by none other than our favorite Save the Last Dance star, Stiles).

Film Review: Tropic Thunder

August 13th, 2008 Written by: Brendan Walsh · 3 Comments

A few weeks ago, Wall-E was released and quickly received some of the best critical praise a film has gotten all year. Then The Dark Knight was released, and immediately dominated the summer movie market. But with the biggest movies of the summer out of the way, what are we supposed to do now? Sit through those again?

By the way, the answer is yes. Both of them. Over, and over, and over again.

However, once we’ve all had our fill of those two triumphs—just when we’re wondering if their tremendous successes have signaled the end of blockbuster season, Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder charges in to remind us that this summer is not over! We do not have to want for movies with a nine figure budget! We can still blow things up!

Movie Industry News: Somber, Not Sober

August 11th, 2008 Written by: Gillian · 1 Comment

Some sad happenings, big openings and minor announcements.  Like most weekends at my apartment.

  • Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac both passed away over the weekend at the respective ages of 65 and 50.  I don’t have anything cheeky to say about it.  Well, I do, but I won’t
  • Pineapple Express had a big opening this weekend, making around $22 million since Wednesday.  This wasn’t enough to smoke The Dark Knight, though which took number one for the 4th weekend in a row and has made a staggering $441 million since it opened.  Holy grosses, Batman!
  • It was announced that Brad Pitt will have a major role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming WWII movie, Inglorious Bastards.  Also in talks are Simon Pegg and B.J. Novak from The Office.  Hostel director Eli Roth has already been cast.  I can only hope something horrific happens to his character as punishment for making Hostel.

DVD to Rent: Breakfast at Tiffany’s

August 2nd, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon · 2 Comments

Audrey Hepburn’s performance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s as the prostitute with the most sophisticated wardrobe around set the bar for lovable call girls long before Pretty Woman. Holly Golightly’s classy demeanor and exquisite Givenchy threads fill the 115 minute film that now rests in classic archives internationally. If you haven’t seen it yet, put it on your must-see list. If you’ve watched it before, watch it again!

What makes this movie so great? The answer is pretty simple: Audrey Hepburn. Not only is she the epitome of elegance, but she’s so good that you might just forget what this film is even about. In a racy role originally meant for Marilyn Monroe, Hepburn brings her own unique touch to the role of Holly Golightly. She is charmingly naive and alarmingly sexual at the same time. Aaaaaaaaaaand, for all of the fashion buffs out there, this is the film that made the “little black dress” an international phenomena!

Film Review: Pineapple Express

July 29th, 2008 Written by: Brendan Walsh · 3 Comments

In spite of what seems to be an ever-growing backlash, I’m a perennial sucker for movies made by the Judd Apatow mafia. Every one of their films looks like they all called each other up and asked “Hey, I’ve got an idea for a movie. You wanna goof off with the boys for a month and get paid for it?” It’s almost like watching a couple swing dance; it looks like the most fun thing people could to together, and I just wish I could do it that well myself. With the accidental blockbuster success of last year’s Superbad, our friends at Sony Pictures and Apatow Productions try their hand at a real action blockbuster with this summer’s Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express is the boys’ first foray into genre films, rather than their standard “a bunch of guys standing around talking shit,” format. It is the story of Dale Denton (Rogen), mild mannered process server and stoner extraordinaire. When he’s not tricking people into accepting their subpoenas, he’s getting high and listening to talk radio in his car. After a visit to his drug dealer Saul (Franco), and equiped with the rarest, most exclusive weed in the state, Dale decides to smoke a joint in his car outside the home of his next subpoenaed target. While doing so, he witnesses a murder, is seen by the bad guys, and goes to Saul’s for help. When they realize that they might have been followed, and how serious the danger they’re in is, thus begins an absurd game of cat and mouse. That is, if the mice were high, and the cats were idiots.

Political Editorial: Why We Love The Dark Knight

July 25th, 2008 Written by: Alex Goodman · 2 Comments

WARNING: The following article reveals several of The Dark Knight’s plot twists. If you have not yet seen the film and would like to maintain the element of surprise, please refer to our spoiler-free review.

We are living in anxious times. We have lost faith in our government, where the executive branch has scammed us repeatedly, and a new Congress has failed to bring the change we need. Add to the toll the crushing spike in gas prices and a new economic disaster each week, and our nation is quickly becoming desperate for good news. It seems that what we need now, more than ever, is a morale boost, a chance to escape into a better outlook for a while.
