Bijou Philips, Shane West
“What We Do Is Secret” is the opening track of the one and only album by The Germs, the most unruly and exciting band of the LA punk scene of the late 70s. They hold the twin distinctions of pressing the first LA punk 7-inch, and subsequently being banned from playing every club in the city as a result of lead singer Darby Crash’s willfully destructive urges. After one glorious year of tumult and escalating drug-use, Crash split up the band, reformed for one farewell show, then died of a self-administered heroin overdose. He missed out on headlines because John Lennon was shot to death on the other side of the country that same day.
What We Do Is Secret the movie is a biopic of the band, and specifically of Crash. Forcing traditional story elements such as character arc and development of conflict onto a pre-existing historical narrative is a tricky business, but director Rodger Grossman neatly sidesteps some of the usual problems by interspersing talking head interviews with the actors as band members and scenesters, creating a behind-the-music feel that is at once familiar and useful in providing explanation and, in Crash’s case, psychological context.

Oh, the life of a singer-songwriter. It means having a career where you can actually tell the masses what you think. However, it’s only now and then that you can actually find a musician who truly does the opportunity justice in this genre. Originally from Iowa City, Jason Reeves takes this mission very seriously. He’s been known to say, “I’m just a simple boy that believes in love and dreams,” but his greatest characteristic is his willingness to share this belief. His songs aren’t just about young puppy love or the announcement of doing the taboo (Katy Perry pop).
Self taught on the guitar after discovering Bob Dylan and James Taylor, he has taken this this skill and honed it into tremendous talent. Of course, songwriters write about love and heartbreak but Reeves pulls you in a little closer with his lyrics of hope and renewal as well. He’s been the #1 MySpace folk artist for 9 months and has held a consistent spot in the unsigned acoustic top 5. He now has the chance to share even more with audiences as his album, The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache (and Other Frightenting Tales) becomes available on iTunes on August 12th. If you want a physical CD, you’ll have to wait until September 9th.

The last day of the last weekend in July needs to be celbrated with music. For those more interested in checking out some great pop artists, Seal and Nika Costa will be performing at The Pacific Ampitheatre and John Mayer will be celebrating his recent album release, “Live in Los Angeles” with a show at The Irvine Meadows. Check out some crazy (and crazy loud) Swedes, At the Gates performing at The Music Box at the Fonda. Whatever you decide, enjoy your day and the Music Tonight:
