Shopping: Four AMAZING Sales

July 12th, 2008 Written by: Nicola · No Comments

Lisa Kline1. DNA Boutique started their Summer Clearance Thursday, and it’s still going on. The store’s actually already a boutique, so a sale AT a boutique should be even more deal-alicious. A PLUS for those male readers: this boutique has not only women’s clothing but men’s, too - something probably unfairly unaddressed by yours truly… Anyway, female or male, young or old, prices will be discounted 20 to 65%. A good thing for everyone!PS: To make the sale more tantalizing, they aren’t allowed to tell us the brands they sell - so not to hurt the “regular price business” of their sellers. This is like serious undercover, well kind of undercover, sale business! I like it.

  • Where: TWO Locations. Yet another plus: The first, at 7519 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood. The second, at 411 Rose Ave., Venice.
  • Call (310) 399 - 0341 for details.
  • When: NOW.

Staying Fashion Forward: Sweatshops in Your Backyard

July 2nd, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon · 6 Comments

A Small Glimpse into the Wild Success of L.A. Sweatshops

As American as apple pie and embarrassment, sweatshop-made clothing has been a reality in the City of Angels for decades.

- What is a sweatshop?
According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, a sweatshop is “a shop or factory in which employees work for long hours at low wages and under unhealthy conditions.”

The Garment Worker Center in Los Angeles more specifically defines a sweatshop as “a workplace where workers are subject to extreme exploitation, including the absence of a living wage or benefits, poor working conditions, such as health and safety hazards, and arbitrary discipline.”

- How many sweatshops are really in L.A.?
In a 1995 New York Times article titled “Los Angeles Sweatshops are Thriving”, The Economic Development Corporation of Los Angeles reported that out of 120,000 garment industry workers, up to 20,000 worked in sweatshop conditions.

L.A. Street Fashion Series: Nichole Palumbo

June 30th, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon · 1 Comment

NicholePalumbo2TN08-06-29Nichole Palumbo
The best-dressed restaurant hostess in the west by day, Professional Dancer and Choreographer by night

- What is L.A. street fashion to you?
Combining different elements of the city (music, grafitti, the rich & the famous, grunge) and creating a style all your own. Mixing genres, sharing ideas, making it by hand, and making it your own.

- How has this city changed your style?
I think it’s changed anyone who lives in Cali’s style. If you lived in Hicksville you wouldn’t really care about fashion. We live near L.A. We’re obligated to have some kind of style. This city has influenced my style by its sheer versatility. You like to people-watch? Go to L.A. You’ll see bums strung out on coke, millionaires in their Rolls Royces, entire families J-walking to catch the bus, starving artists and musicians, hole-in-the wall coffee shops, and mile high corporate buildings. What more inspiration do you want, right?

L.A. Street Fashion: Sahra Nguyen

June 23rd, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon · No Comments

SahraNguyen5TN08-06-21“In L.A. they call me Boston. In Boston, they call me bossy…”
Sahra Nguyen (UCLA student, activist, artist, mover, and shaker)

Sahra Nguyen hailing from Boston, residing in Santa Monica, and shot-calling worldwide, took some time out of her hectic schedule to tell LA.CityZine what’s good with street fashion in the City of Angels.

What is L.A. street fashion?

To me, L.A. street fashion means, “I don’t give a fuck” about what anybody else thinks. The beautiful thing about L.A. is that it’s the biggest conglomerate of culture within a city I’ve ever seen, and culture is defined by the distinctiveness of individuals. So individualism really is timeless. From what I’ve seen, L.A. street fashion is more than just a trend it’s a fucking lifestyle! You wear what you do because you rock it with confidence. Coordinating not matching is so key. I hate it when people wear red on red on red and think they’re the shit. That kind of matching requires no creative eye. So, coordinating means being creative with how different colors, patterns, shapes and accessories match, contrast or compliment each other. And if we’re talking about street fashion, I also believe it’s about complimenting your environment. How are you gonna stand out as an individual from everyone around you? How do you wanna make yourself pop out against the concrete jungle?

LA Style: Go Native.

June 10th, 2008 Written by: Kendra · No Comments

franklinKPIf you’re a girl and you like clothes, I have a declaration. I think it’s impossible to walk by Native on Franklin without buying something. The clothes are so cute and affordable and the staff so friendly, you’d have to be a budget nazi to pass this place up. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone home with a dress or a bracelet when my only goal was a magazine from Daily Planet.

On Saturday, my friend Stacey and I walked by Native on our way to Bourgeois Pig. I should say we tried to walk by Native. We never made it far enough to have our coffee. Lured in by the $20 rack, we spent the whole 40 minutes we had to kill before heading to the Arclight buying clothing instead of caffeinating ourselves. Totally worth it.

Local Style: It Might be Safe to Shop Americana…

June 3rd, 2008 Written by: Kendra · No Comments

americana It’s impossible to mention the new shopping center Americana in Glendale without getting mixed reactions.  People curse.  Others allow their faces to light up like they’re talking about the divine.  You’ll hear about how the construction has been going on since the dark ages.  How Glendale doesn’t need another shopping center.  They’ll tell you that it’s the best shopping in Los Angeles.  That having an H&M near their apartment has drastically bettered their quality of life.

It’s a mall, people.

But, because the Americana has now been open for a month, I think it’s safe to recommend it.  I mean, it’s still going to be crazy busy and you’ll still get annoyed but at this point, I think it’s worth it.  First off, it’s huge.  Gigantic.  Way bigger than The Grove but the same feel, maybe even cuter.  Definitely more open and airy.  There are several restaurants, including the prerequisite Cheesecake Factory and a cute little Coffee Bean so you can shop with a caffeine buzz.  The movie theater is reason alone to pay a visit.  18 screens.  Much better than the spitting frog place across the street, even if the tickets are pricier ($11.75).
