LA Sports: Woeful Weekend for L.A. Soccer

May 12th, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago · 1 Comment

lagalaxy08-05-13Mother’s Day weekend wasn’t too nurturing for any of the local soccer teams. Both the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA teams were defeated at the Home Depot Center in Major League Soccer’s Week 7 with an identical score of 2-1.

We begin on Saturday where the Galaxy received an improved New York Red Bulls team. A favorable result could have given Los Angeles the absolute lead in the Western Conference but unfortunately the win never arrived. Danleigh Borman and the Colombian international Juan Pablo Angel scored for the visitors. As for the Angelinos, Alan Gordon was the man in charge of scoring the solitary goal.

With this loss, the Galaxy remains in third place in the Western Conference with 8 points and a record of (2-3-2).

Sports: Flourishing Beckham Wins “Player of the Week”

May 8th, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago · 1 Comment

david beckham08-05-08At last David Beckham is showing his skills on the field rather than outside. In the world of soccer it doesn’t matter what you look like, how much money you make or who are you married to. In the world of soccer what matters is the will and the heart you put in every single game.

There is no doubt that Beckham is starting to do so. For the second time in this young season, the British superstar has been named the Major League Soccer’s “Player of the Week.” This is partly due to his two extraordinary goals that gave the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-2 tie with Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

Fans all over the world are ready to finally see the amazing Beckham, not the mediocre one. So much anticipation has been raised with his arrival and after the disappointing season last year, everyone is hoping to see a positive turnaround.

L.A. Sports This Week - More NBA Playoffs, Finally Dodger Success

May 5th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

LA Sports - Regular PhotoThe Lakers look like they might be the best team in the NBA right now. They continue their playoff run this week. Both the Dodgers and Angels have been hot lately, and look to build off their recent success.

NBA

Lakers

  • vs Utah, Wednesday, 7:30, TNT
  • at Utah, Friday, 6:00, ESPN
  • at Utah, Sunday, 12:30, ABC

The Lakers rolled over the Jazz 109-98 on Sunday in a game that dragged horribly near the end, with 24 fouls called in the 4th quarter. The Jazz probably won’t go down that easily in the rest of the series, but the Lakers seem to be peaking right now and may be able to make it through the series without too many issues. Something to look out for is the Jazz’ success at home – they lost only four games at EnergySolutions Arena over the entire regular season, although Houston did win there once in the first round.

Dodger Beat: Bring Out the Brooms

May 2nd, 2008 Written by: Anthony · No Comments

dodger beat - 08-5-1 russell martinLooks like all the Dodgers needed was a good tongue lashing from me. They straightened up and started to fly right, well at least this week. Hopefully they can keep it up for the rest of the season or at least until the All-Star break.

The Dodgers ended the week off on the right foot, sweeping the series against the Rockies. The Rockies had been struggling going into the series and the Dodgers took advantage of it. They beat them 8-7, 11-3 and 3-2. The first game went a lucky 13 innings with the Dodgers winning it on a walk-off sacrifice fly from Russell Martin. The second game in the series was an easy win for the Dodgers. Brad Penny turned in one of his best pitching performances (7 innings/3 earned runs). He was backed up by 10 runs in the first inning, with four of those runs coming on Matt Kemp’s first career grand slam. The third game in the series needed extra inning , James Loney drove in Rafael Furcal with the winning run in the 10th inning.

HBO Boxing: Bernard Hopkins vs. Joe Calzaghe

April 18th, 2008 Written by: Jeff Barrick · No Comments

Hopkins vs. Calzaghe

Calzaghe 1Week after week HBO Boxing has been putting together some of the great fights of the past several years. It has been all the more fantastic because the majority of these boxing events are free (if you have cable). Of course HBO cost a little extra each month but I’m talking about Pay Per View. Special boxing events are generally pretty pricy and if they’re on every weekend the total will begin to mount faster than you can imagine.

This Week in Sports: NBA Playoffs Begin

April 14th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

sports08-04-13The Lakers begin the playoffs this week after a superb weekend showing. Also in the playoffs are the Ducks, who had a miserable week, falling into an 0-2 hole. The Dodgers and Angels both have a full slate of games against opponents they should beat.

NBA

Lakers

  • vs. Sacramento, Tuesday, 7:30, FSW
  • vs. Undetermined Playoff Opponent later in week

The Lakers wrapped up an extremely impressive week with victories over both New Orleans and San Antonio over the weekend. They currently hold the number one seed in the West and the tiebreaker over the Hornets, their nearest competition. The Tuesday game against Sacramento should be a tune-up for the postseason, which begins on Saturday. The Nuggets are the most likely opponent for the Lakers, though they could still face Dallas or Golden State. Both Denver and Golden State pose easy matchups for the Lakers, but Dallas would be a little tougher. Either way, the Lakers should make it through to the second round with no real problems.

Dodger Beat: Diamondbacks Put Dodgers in Their Place

April 11th, 2008 Written by: Anthony · No Comments

dodger beat - 08-04-10 peavyThe first two series for the Dodgers started out well. They won 2 out of 3 against the hated Giants to start the season. As good as starting the season at home was, the Dodgers went on the road for their next series. They were off to San Diego to face the Padres.

Joe Torre called on Kuroda, the Japanese rookie, for his first start of the season. The Dodgers won the first game 7-1 behind Kuroda’s quality start (one earned run, 3 hits, no walks and four strike outs). The second game pitted Penny against Peavy, in what ended up being a great pitching dual, but a 4-1 loss for the Dodgers. Penny gave up all four runs in the first inning. The Dodgers haven’t won a game started by Peavy since 2003 and he made sure they didn’t win again, giving up only two hits in a complete game effort. Derek Lowe pitched the closing game and won 3-2 thanks to a Chin-lung Hu’s game winning single in the 9th inning. [ Read The Full Story -> ]

This Week in Sports: Big Laker Games, NHL Playoffs Begin

April 8th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst · No Comments

watchingsports08-04-08The Lakers have a couple of big games this weekend that could decide playoff seeding, while the Ducks have already reached the playoffs and begin their title defense on Thursday. Both the Dodgers and the Angels face their top rivals for division titles this week.

Lakers

  • @ Portland, Tuesday, 7:00, KCAL
  • @ Clippers, Thursday, 7:30, TNT
  • vs. New Orleans, Friday, 7:30, FSW
  • vs. San Antonio, Sunday, 12:30, ABC

The Lakers have only five games left in their season before the real work begins. These last few games are still important, however, because they will determine seeding in the extremely competitive Western Conference. Portland and the Clippers should be easy work for the powerhouse Lakers, but the Hornets and Spurs are the other top teams in the Conference. Beating either one would go far in helping the Lakers get the #1 seed, but neither game will be easy. Expect the Lakers to win one of the two games.

Dodger Beat: Starting the Season Strong

April 4th, 2008 Written by: Anthony · No Comments

dodger beat - 08-04-03 opening dayThe Dodgers came home for opening day and won their first series against the rival Giants and their first 2 out of 3 games. Not a bad way to start the season. It was a packed house, it was a sea of blue and when the fans did the wave it actually did look like the ocean (if the water here was clean and blue that is).

The Dodgers won on opening day 5-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Penny (6 2/3 scoreless innings), a two-run home run from Jeff Kent and Furcal chipped in with 3 hits and an RBI. The stadium was sold out and the energy was strong, the way opening day should be.
