As I begin to write this, I find myself ripping at the seams with excitement. This is what a baseball must feel like every time it rips through the sky at hellacious speeds immediately after being smashed by the powerful and perfect swing of a bat. This past Saturday, in what may have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I had the opportunity to attend a Dodger game at the Coliseum; an event that commemorated the first venue in which the Dodgers played when they first came to Los Angeles in 1958. As it turned out, however, the event itself, in truly Dickensian fashion, proved to be not only the best of times but also the worst of times.

The Dodgers are on a roll, just not the kind of roll they would like to be on. They have lost four out of their last five games and the other game was a tie. The Dodgers need to get something going before the season starts, yes, yes, it’s only spring training, but they need to be heading into the season with some momentum. It’s never good for a team to start the season with a losing streak, even if the games mean nothing.
The NL West figures to be one of the toughest divisions once again with the Dodgers, Rockies, Diamondbacks and Padres all in the mix. The Dodgers need to get off to a good start right out of the gate to have a chance to win the NL West.
The Dodgers still have unsolved gaps in the roster (outfielders and injuries) and with only four days left until opening day many fans are hoping Torre comes up with some solutions soon. The good news is that they seem to have a strong starting rotation with Brad Penny, Derek Lowe and Hiroki Kuroda all having good spring training. Rafeal Furcal (featured) was the best player for the Dodgers last year and is on track to have yet another great year. All the young players for the Dodgers Russell Martin, James Loney, Andre Either and Matt Kemp, are all having very successful spring trainings. Lets hope they can keep it up during the regular season.

With the MLB regular season only about a week away the Dodgers, just like every other team, are playing their final spring training games and trying to figure out who is going to be on their 25 man roster to start the season. The latter is easier said than done. The Dodgers have an abundance of outfielders, Andrew Jones will be the starting center fielder for sure, but choosing between Pierre, Kemp and Ethier (pictured) for the two corner spots is proving difficult for new skipper Torre. Torre hasn’t decided yet making it more than likely that it will come down to the wire.
Third base is one of the biggest problems that the Dodgers have yet to address. Nomar and LaRoche, the two player that were supposed to be battling it out for third base, are both injured. LaRoche had surgery on his right thumb, while Nomar has a broken hand, neither will be ready for opening day. The only logical solution is for the Dodgers to trade for someone that will really help them at the corner. Loretta from the Astros is a name that has been thrown out there along with Belliard from the Nationals. Both would be within the Dodgers price range and both are excellent defenders with average offense.

After an 18+ hour flight that spanned 7,500 miles, The Dodgers landed safely in China. They are set to play the San Diego Padres in Beijings Wukesong Stadium on Friday 1 a.m. Eastern time. Wukesong Stadium will also be the stadium where baseball will be played during the 2008 Olympics. The Dodgers and Padres will be the first ever MLB teams to play in China. Commissioner Bud Selig and the MLB are hoping that this leads to more games in China and other places around the world.
The split squad Dodgers had a chance to practice on the field and so far reviews of the stadium have been positive. The grass was a little to short and fast, but was deemed playable by most of the team. Torres split squad consists mainly of prospects and non roster invitees. The only big names that are really there for the Dodgers are Andrew Jones and Matt Kemp; Nomar Garciaparra was a late scratch because of injuries.

The Lakers decided to take it easy last night and suffered a loss to the Kings 114-113. They trailed the entire game until they attempted a late surge in the 3rd. They gained the lead for a moment in the 4th, but could not close it out. Kobe Bryant took a tough shot at the buzzer for the win, but instead lost, making their record 44-19. They still hold the top spot in the west, but only by half a game ahead of San Antonio.
The Kings shot .550 percent from the field, with 6 players in double figures. They scored 71 points in the first half, as the Lakers played virtually no defense. The Lakers out scored them, 53-43 in the second half, and still could not win. Kobe scored only 1 point in the 4th quarter, he finished with 26. Pau Gasol had 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.

After 17 grueling years of playing in the NFL Brett Favre has finally decided to call it quits. After breaking all sorts of records, most consecutive games played at quarterback (253), most passing yards, most TDs and most interceptions, just to name a few.
A teary eyed Favre basically said that he could still play, but he can’t handle the mental part of the game. That he was just tired of training for upcoming seasons. He doesn’t care if he is ending his career with his last pass being the interception that lost the Packers chances of going to the Super Bowl. And he doesn’t care whether or not he is ranked among the best quarterbacks (he’s not even in my top 5), he played for the passion and fun of the game. One thing is for certain he always gave it his all every game and for that he is greatly appreciated.

What’s going on with sports this year? Why is there so much interest in a team or player going undefeated in a season? It all started with the Patriots. They have a brush with greatness and now everyone wants to see someone go undefeated. I understand that, yes it would be cool if it actually happened, but enough with trying to predict an undefeated season in every sport. Next thing you know the Yankees win their first 5 games out of 162 and they’re going undefeated.
The next victim of having an undefeated season thrust upon them is Tiger Woods. He wins his first two tournaments (out of the seventeen that he has to play) and all of sudden he can go undefeated. Doesn’t anyone realize how hard that would be to accomplish? It’s hard to do in team sports, imagine in golf where it’s you against 70-80 players. I doubt very much that it will happen. Tiger Woods will be known as the best golfer when his time is done, but it won’t be for an undefeated season. It will be for the most tour wins and the most major wins ever.

With the Western conference getting even stronger due to the barrage of big time trades prior to the deadline, it’s time for the dormant (or doormat…whichever you prefer) Clippers to have their say. About the only thing left for the Clippers this season is to affect the seeding for the playoff contenders. The Clippers play the Blazers, who are contending for the final playoff spot, three more times. They play the West leading Lakers twice more. They also play Houston, Denver, and Dallas two more times apiece. All of these teams look to be headed to the playoffs so the Clippers will have an effect on the seeding. Maybe they can knock the rival Lakers down a couple seeds. That should be exciting right Clippers fans?
The common sense factor told us the Clippers were eliminated from the playoff picture about 10 games into the season, but mathematics is soon to make it certain. The good news is that it will be difficult for even the Clips to foul up their upcoming lotto pick with so much talent coming out of the college ranks. Look around the college landscape and you’ll see freshman dominating and leading their teams, one and done’s, which is good news for the Lottery bound Clippers. Tune in Wednesday as the Clippers host the Portland Trailblazers at 7:30.

Ever wonder what’s worth watching live on TV anymore? With thousands of channels there is only a handful of things worth watching. Here is your list of new shows, exciting TV debut’s and basketball games that you should be sure not to miss!
What to Watch Live
A Raisin in the Sun (Monday, ABC, 8 PM)
Sean Combs stars in this TV movie based Lorraine Hansley’s Broadway play. The movie features much of the same cast as 2004’s Broadway revival, two of whom, Phylicia Rashad and Audra McDonald, won Tonys for their performances. The success of the revival (it was the 2nd highest grossing Broadway play in history) and Combs’ star power led to ABC green-lighting director Kenny Leon’s project to make a movie out of the play. Watch to see if Combs’ acting holds up to his other talents and the excellent reviews he received on Broadway.

Somebody game me a call and let me know that the Lakers beat the Suns, their first really big win against a top team. Kobe scored an impressive 41 points to spoil Shaq Suns debut. The Lakers are being picked by many analysts to be the top contender for the championship and this victory is a good step towards that. I personal don’t see that happening. They are a great team, but I can’t see them outlasting the Spurs, Suns or for that matter the Hornets in a 7 games series. I guess they’ll just have to prove me wrong.
Things aren’t looking any better for the Clippers, after a great win against the Grizzlies on Wednesday they have 3 straight games against top teams in the NBA. First the Jazz, then the Lakers and finally the Celtics. I feel sorry for them, but who knows maybe they’ll get luck and win one of them.
